TOP STORIESBASEBALL: Bellaire Cardinals play comeback kid over Alvin02:14 PM CDT on Monday, May 26, 2008The Bellaire Cardinals, A.K.A the Heart Attack Kids, made yet another third game rally to push them deeper into the playoffs, defeating Alvin. After dropping the first game to Alvin 3-1, Bellaire needed to win the next two games to stay alive; this concept was nothing new to Bellaire. Bellaire knocked off Katy earlier in the playoffs rallying back to take the last two games of the series to advance against district rival Lamar. The Bellaire verse Lamar series may have been one of the best, especially with the heated rivalry these two teams share. Bellaire took the first game big, 11-1, but dropped the second game, forcing a third. The third game was a real nail bitter, with Bellaire taking the series with a 1-0 victory. Alvin took the first game Friday night 3-1 behind some strong pitching and with a double header on Saturday the heat was on. Seriously, the heat got turned up Saturday, with an on field temperature of 98 degrees.
HSGT Bellaire and Alvin were clearly effected by the heat, committing numerous errors on both sides allowing runs to come in the normally would not have. Bellaire trailed most of the game second game 6-3 until Alvin’s Travis Jenkins began to struggle on the mound walking consecutive batters loading the bases. Bellaire saw the opportunity and capitalized with a Will McCaleb infield single to score Washington from third, tying the game at six all. A fielding error by Alvin allowed the seventh and final run to score winning the game for Bellaire 7-6.
HSGT Game three was a battle of attrition against the heat and fatigue, and Bellaire proved to last longer and stronger, getting another come from behind win 5-3, sending them to the regional finals against district rival West Side. |
