TOP STORIESFOOTBALL: Cy Woods Wildcats gear up for their first varsity season01:56 PM CDT on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Cy Woods is entering their first full season with a varsity schedule in one of the hardest districts in the area. In a district that boasts schools like Cy Ridge, Cy Falls, and Cy Fair, the Cy Woods Wildcats have the highest expectations and expected to be a big factor. The Wildcats have lost on two games in two seasons out of a mixed JV and varsity schedule, and are returning the entire team they’ve had since the beginning. The Wildcats have a 90 man roster with 75 of their players being seniors, Cy Woods has amazing depth. Coach David Jones will tell you that some their biggest strengths are found on the field. Jones will tell you that the support from both the school and the parents fuels these players winning mentality. Last year Cy Woods had teams in the playoffs for every sport except for two, golf and tennis; and with so much success so soon, its no surprise that Cy Woods has the confidence that they can win and perform at a high level. Many people could look at them and discuss their lack of experience in a full varsity season, but these players are extremely familiar with each other after playing together for so long. Last season they played three varsity teams and beat all three. Offensively Cy Woods runs a four-wide no huddle style of offense, led by quarterback Lucas Devilleirs, and running back Chris Walker. Devilleirs is an athletic quarterback that can still stretch the field with a strong arm and has the field smarts to make the necessary reads. He is currently weighing offers from West Point as well as other schools, proving he has the intelligence to go along with his athletic abilities. Running back Chris Walker may be small in stature, but can pack a punch. Walker is a compact back who runs a 4.4 40-yard dash and benches over 300 pounds. He mixes his speed with strength and with a low center of gravity, look for him to open some eyes this season. Defensively the Wildcats are led by linebacker Patrick West and defensive tackle Justin Washington. West is currently weighing offers from Air Force, Tulsa and Stanford; while Washington is getting looks from Arizona, Utah, and UTEP. Cy Woods gets their start against A&M Consolidated and is looking to make an impact in district 15-5A. |
