Bobby Knight throwing chair, or some other negative coaching tirade?
It’s as a scene you will never see Kinkaid track coach Cheryl Mitchell involved in.
Mitchell has been coaching girls track & field and cross country at Kinkaid High School for 11 years.
And although she feels it's important to win, she also believes it's important to enjoy the steps along the way that lead to winning:
"Athletes and when I was an athlete, I just feel like athletes compete with heart and practice harder if you encourage them,” said Mitchell. “If you have enthusiasm and energy and I just believe that energy begets energy."
Mitchell is one of only eight coaches nationwide selected for the Positive Coaching Alliance's Coach of the Year award. And she believes her style of coaching is becoming more widely accepted every year.
"I think that there's a shift in sport, specifically sport and education and youth sports,” said Mitchell.
And her athletes certainly appreciate her approach.

"'Cause we're all kinda tired at this point in the year, and it's nice to have someone tell you what you do right rather than yelling at you about what you did wrong,” said Kinkaid senior Mason Bashaw.
"I just hope they leave sports with good memories, great friends and life lessons learned,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell's Kinkaid teams have won three straight cross-country titles and they're vying for a track and field title this Spring.
