TOP STORIESSix Idahoans to play Bronco footballFIRST ON KTVB.COM01:55 PM MST on Thursday, February 14, 2008 BOISE - Six Idahoans were listed on Boise State's newest recruiting class which was released Wednesday. Of the six, three are grayshirts from the 2007 class, while three are incoming freshmen.
Wide receiver Van Drumgoole from Vallivue and offensive lineman Spencer Gerke of Bishop Kelly both were big players during NewsChannel 7’s HS GameTime this fall – and now will get a chance to make big plays on the blue turf.
Drumgoole is expected to grayshirt and will join the team in 2009.
“He can really run,” Petersen said of Drumgoole. “That’s the thing that kinda came up. I think the first time I might have seen him was on the news – I saw a blur go by, and I was like ‘that doesn’t look like your normal football player. Someone said – he’s fast. Not just Idaho fast – but he’s fast. That got our attention”
Gerke and Drumgoole are joined by linebacker Byron Hout from Lake City HS in Coeur d' Alene as the newest Gem State Broncos. Running back Matt Kaiserman from Skyview HS and defensive lineman Shea McClellin from Marsing HS grayshirted in 2007 and have since joined the program.
Gerke was touted as much for his defensive skills as his listed position – offensive guard.
“He’s a tough, hard-working blue collar guy,” Petersen said.
The Broncos signed 24 players from across the country. In addition to Idaho, players come from Washington, Oregon, California, Texas, Colorado, Georgia and Arizona.
Petersen had high praise for defensive tackle Greg Grimes – a recruit out of Sacramento, CA.
“He should be going to the New York Giants right now, and how come he’s coming to Boise State?,” Petersen said to laughs. “Some guys fall off (the radar). He’s a heck of a player and fits our profile, and we got to him late – and he just kinda worked out.”
“The one thing about our situation here is that we will not take a kid just to fill up a position – where I think that happens a lot of the time out there,” head coach Chris Petersen said. “I think the guys we’ve chosen to come to Boise State we feel very good about.
Petersen said the top factor in getting a student athlete to sign with Boise State is simple – winning.
“Guys want to play for a winning program, and that’s the important thing – that you keep winning,” he said.
