TOP STORIESNew-look trojans airing it out in hopes of first 5A playoff berthPOST FALLS, IDAHO - For the past two years, the Post Falls High School football team has ended its season on the bitter of end of consecutive three win totals. Three years ago, the Trojans captured the respect of North Idaho prep football fans all the way to the Inland Empire League title before falling to Cody Hawkins' (now the starting QB at the University of Colorado) and eventual state champion Bishop Kelly in the first round of the 4A state playoffs.
Post Falls (1-0), who downed Sandpoint 28-14 last week, is now primed to open the eyes of the IEL gridiron faithful. Senior running back Randy Hamilton, who's older brother Dan carried a bulk of the work load during the Trojans' 8-2 season in 2004, feels the orange and black are more than capable of showing glimpses of the '04 IEL champs.
"We have high hopes," notes Hamilton, who ran for two touchdowns and a caught another in last weekends weather delayed contest. " I definitely think we have it takes, and I feel we can be the same caliber team as my brothers during his junior year (2004). Our new offense will really help us out."
Since 2003, the Trojans have ran the speedy fly-offense designed strategically to get speed on the edge, but with a seasoned quarterback in senior Casey Dragon and an array of targets such as Brandon Brubaker, Jesse Weeks, Johnny Rowland, and possibly the finest receiver in the league in senior Levi Buckles, coach Hinz' offensive unit seemingly has all the ingredients to be spreading things out a bit-- a perfect fit for Buckles.
"I like that we are spreading it out this year," says the 6-3 195-pound target. " We are coming along and its nice to have the experience."
Buckles, who has already been on recruiting visits to the University of Idaho and NAIA power Carroll College, keeps the plan simple in referencing his team goals during his final prep season.
"We just have to win football games; plain and simple."
Hinz enters his third season as the Trojan headman returning 14 starters and 23 letter winners from a year ago including gritty two-way lineman Scott Baxter, Ryan Chapin, Sam Fetterhoff, and Jacob King to harass opposing backfields while giving Dragon room to work with on the offensive side of the equation.
"I think we're going to suprise some people."
Junior Linebacker Cole Amende will be looked to anchor the Trojan defense.
Post Falls will get a chance to prove their worth early when they entertain 5A Southern Idaho Conference foe Caldwell this Friday. The Bulldogs (1-0) return virtually their entire starting lineup on both sides of the football from last years 2-7 squad, including University of Washington commit Terence Thomas in the trenches (ol/dl). |
