TOP STORIESHigh school football is here!
KREM.com Making a splash in high school sports! Football season is officially here and it looks to be another exciting year in the Greater Spokane League. Ferris, who finished the season 8-2 (7-1 in league play) last year, looks to be the team to beat in the GSL with several skill players returning. Seniors Jeff Minnerly and Shawn Stockton will take the majority of the snaps at quarterback again this season. Jared Karstetter, considered by some to be the best wide receiver in the state, will be their top target. Senior McKenzie Murphey also returns at running back. The rest of the league is up for grabs. Gonzaga Prep fought all the way into the state semifinals last year, but lost 28 seniors over the offseason. Lewis & Clark could find themselves in the mix. They finished 5-4 (5-3 in the GSL) last year, but they also return several key players. The star should be linebacker/running back Alex Shaw. East Valley, which finished third in the league last year, looks again to be the top 3A team in the GSL. Mead won three straight games to round out 2006. They could carry that momentum into 2007. In Idaho, it's tough to go against the defending 5A state champs, so we won't. Neither did Sports Illustrated who picked the T-Wolves as the top team in Idaho. Lake City should be the top team once again in the Inland Empire League. The Timberwolves graduated a ton of talent, but return state player of the year Byron Hout. He'll star on both sides of the ball (OL/LB). Coeur d'Alene finished 7-3 last season. The Vikings were also hit hard by graduation, but should make a run at the playoffs. As always, they play the games for a reason. We'll see what happens as the season unfolds. Idaho starts tonight (August 24th), Washington begins next week (August 30th). Fans of the smaller schools, don't fret. You'll get your love to as the year goes on. |
