Temecula Chaparral clawed its way back into the game against the No. 3 Broncos, but quarterback Tyler Hansen dropped the game-deciding two-point conversion, and Vista Murrieta hung on for a 21-20 victory in the Southwestern League game. "They missed out big time," Chaparral coach Tommy Leach said about Fox Sports. "We knew it would be a show." Story continues below Paul Alvarez / The Press- Enterprise Vista Murrieta quarterback Kavon Seaton is taken down by Chaparral's Ty Scott. It was Seaton who scored the Broncos' final touchdown, and he finished with 107 yards rushing. Chaparral (5-3, 2-1 in league) marched downfield from its 17-yard line to the Broncos 9-yard line to put the Pumas in position for Hansen to hit receiver Ronnie Kuan on a 9-yard fade pass, pulling them within one with 13.9 seconds remaining. Leach kept his offense on the field for the two-point conversion, but the Pumas were hit with a costly false-start penalty, which pushed them back to the 7. Initially, Leach sent out kicker Brett Symonds for the potential game-tying extra-point conversion, but after a Vista Murrieta timeout, Hansen and the offense returned to the field. The play: a halfback option to Jonathan Diaz, who could choose to throw to a receiver, or back across the field to Hansen. He chose Hansen. Hansen took his eye off the ball for a split second as the Broncos' Alex Cartwright, put into the game as an extra defensive back, made a move toward him. Story continues below Paul Alvarez / The Press- Enterprise Chaparral quarterback Tyler Hansen has a balanced game, running for 115 yards and passing for 117. The loss of concentration proved costly, as Hansen bobbled the ball. "They've ran that play before, the pitch-pass," Broncos coach Coley Candaele said, catching his breath after the game's frenetic final minute. "The defense knew it was a play they would come back to, and Alex made a great play." The Broncos looked poised to run away with the game after Bradley Randle scored a 1-yard touchdown with 7:15 in the third quarter, giving the Broncos a 14-0 lead. That was when Hansen made the Broncos (8-0, 3-0) pay. Hansen called a quarterback keeper, sprinting to a 42-yard score with 5:07 left in the third quarter. Then, with 7:32 left in the fourth, Hansen again kept the ball on the option, scoring a 38-yard game-tying touchdown. Hansen finished with 115 yards rushing and 117 passing, accounting for all of the Pumas' scores. "We weren't expecting them to run out of the option," Candaele said. "We guessed wrong." The Broncos returned the favor, striking quickly with huge runs by quarterback Kavon Seaton and Randle. Seaton scored on a 3-yard run to stretch the lead to 21-14, setting up the game's tense conclusion. Both Seaton and Randle finished with 100-yard rushing nights and a rushing touchdown, Seaton with 107 yards and Randle with 120 yards. |
