Hansen was to share snaps with Corona Centennial's Matt Scott, but was forced into double duty when Scott was injured in the first quarter. Hansen shined, throwing two touchdowns while rushing for a third as the Inland Marine team defeated the Coastal Navy team, 27-13, in the Southern California Bowl all-star football game at Cal State Fullerton. "It was an awesome experience for me and my teammates," said Hansen, who will sign his letter of intent with Colorado next month. "I don't always get the recognition, so I'm glad I got the chance to come out here and show everybody that I am a great quarterback." Scott had to leave after his second play of the game. Centennial coach Matt Logan, who coached the Inland Marine team, said Scott suffered a high ankle sprain, perhaps even a slight fracture. Scott, The Press-Enterprise Riverside County Player of the Year, was able to put weight on the ankle, but he was on crutches after the game. Hansen hit Dunstan for a TD reception in the fourth quarter. Inland Marine had six quarterbacks on its roster, but only Scott and Hansen took snaps in practices leading up to the game. Chaparral frequently uses a spread formation offense, so Hansen had little trouble picking up Centennial's schemes. "I'm really disappointed for Matt because I know how much he wanted to play in this game," Logan said. "But Tyler stepped in and did a wonderful job making some really big plays when we needed them." Inland Marine moved the ball extremely well on offense, especially on the ground as Riverside Notre Dame's Kenjon Barner ran through the Coastal Navy defense at will. Barner ripped off a 53-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and had 139 yards by halftime. Despite Barner's efforts, Inland Marine came up empty on the scoreboard until its final drive of the half. Coastal Navy held its opponent scoreless by blocking a field goal and forcing two turnovers. Coastal Navy took the early lead when San Clemente's Brad Curtis found Santa Ana Mater Dei's Andrew Abbott over the middle for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Abbott bounced off a hit from Colton's Daniel Sorensen at the 20 and scampered into the end zone. Hansen helped the Inland Marine team respond before the half, delivering two clutch throws. On third-and 23, Hansen scrambled away from pressure and found Victorville Silverado's Kevin Lewis along the sideline for a 30-yard gain. Five plays later, Hansen again slipped defenders and hit Centennial's Marsel Posey for an 11-yard score. The Press-Enterprise Riverside County Player of the Year was on crutches after the game. "Yeah, I was getting a little frustrated," Hansen said about the team's inability to punch the ball in on an earlier drive. "I just told myself, 'It's time for me to step up and make a big play.' " Inland Marine took the lead when Hansen scored on the ensuing two-point conversion. The play started as a double reverse, but Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon's Jonathan Warzeka pulled up and threw to Hansen, who dodged a defender before reaching the end zone. "We wanted to put some pressure on them," Logan said. Hansen helped Inland Marine respond in the second half, scoring on a 1-yard keeper. Hansen sealed the game and the game's Offensive MVP award when hooked up with Palm Desert's Stephen Dunstan for a 22-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. "He played an amazing game, and I am very proud of him," Chaparral coach Tommy Leach said after the game. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Inland Marine team started chanting in unison, "I. E., I. E., I. E." Redlands East Valley defensive lineman Quinton Toailoa said he and his teammates hoped to earn some respect from outside the Inland Empire borders. "They (Coastal Navy players) seemed to be getting all the attention this week," said Toailoa, who didn't play because of a shoulder injury. "They were the first to eat. They got the first bus. "We wanted to show everybody what I. E. football is about." Reach Eric-Paul Johnson at 951-368-9530 or ejohnson@PE.com |
