But the Pumas didn't allow a goal, or anything close, during a 12:25 span in the second half in a 12-9 win over the Sharks. "We can go on runs like that, and we've done that this year," Chaparral goalie Austin Ramer said. "We've got the personnel." Even without top defender Trevor Sprague, who drew a major penalty and was ejected in the second quarter, Chaparral responded with even more high-pressure defense. "That was a decision we made before the season even started," Pumas coach Chad Lemons said. "We've taken a lot of pride in our defense -- especially when we get momentum." There was plenty of momentum in the third quarter. Steven Tennant, Travis Thomas, Shane Leverson and Erik Donahu accounted for six goals in building up a 12-6 lead. Tennant finished with six goals. The Sharks (21-7-1) responded by holding Chaparral (22-8) scoreless in the fourth period -- backed by goalie Jordan Ruggieri's 11 saves (five in that final period). Brent Trautman, Evan Vardayu and Daniel Mundy scored goals in the final two minutes for Corona Santiago, but Chaparral's lead was too substantial. Trautman and Trevor Rowland each had three goals. Chaparral will face Redlands in Wednesday's CIF semifinal showdown. Redlands beat Chaparral in last year's semifinals. "Games like that usually come down to teams trying to stop the other team's top scorer, so we know they'll be watching Steven (Tennant) pretty closely," Lemons said. "To win this far into the playoffs, it's just a question of matchups."
