He got one. Junior Natalee Pulver pitched a six-hit shutout, and freshman Katelyn Rentschler's fourth-inning double plated the only run as the Eagles defeated the Terriers, 1-0, in a CIF Division 2 playoff semifinal softball game on Tuesday. "We knew it wasn't going to be like the last time we played them," Masucci said. Etiwanda (28-2) topped Redlands, 5-2, in a preseason tournament game March 19, but didn't face Terriers senior ace Kim Bruins in that game. She was sidelined with an injury. "(Bruins) was a little dinged up then, so we knew she was going to bring her A-game this time and that we would have to take advantage of the opportunities we got and we did. We knew it was going to be a game like that. I'm just glad it was us (on the winning side)," Masucci said. Locked in a scoreless game, senior Elizabeth Santana singled to start the fourth and was sacrificed to second base on a bunt by senior Stephanie Tarango. Rentschler then crushed a double to score Santana and provide Pulver with the only run support she needed. "She hit her spots and made them hit the ball where we our defense was positioned," Masucci said. "She's not overpowering but she's extremely tough to hit." Pulver (18-2) struck out four and walked three. "I think our defense was really strong and we had really good, timely hitting," said Pulver, who assisted on the final out of the game and also had a single. "And we had great pitching," added Rentschler, the Eagles' starting catcher. "(Pulver) pitched really well." The Terriers (23-8) threatened to score in the fifth when sophomore Kendall Apodaca and freshman Narissa Garcia singled to put two runners on with two out. But Pulver got senior Jessica Alvarado to ground out, ending the inning, and then retired six of the next seven batters she faced to finish the game. "It was a great game. I wish we could've come out one top but you just have to tip your cap to (Masucci) and Etiwanda," Redlands coach Brandon Ford said. Bruins (16-8), who had pitched 43 consecutive scoreless innings coming into Tuesday's game, struck out three and walked two. Etiwanda will play Vista Murrieta in the championship game. "I didn't realize how difficult it would be to get back here," said Masucci, who won a CIF title in his first season at Etiwanda in 2002. "It means a lot. This is a good group of girls." |
