Moreno Valley Canyon Springs head football coach Richard Bancroft resigned Monday, citing time constraints.

Bancroft and his wife, Jennifer, became parents of a son, Asher, on April 17. After a week off from school to spend time with his family, Bancroft decided he could no longer work the hours required of a football coach.

"With him being so young I don't want to miss him growing up," Bancroft said. "It is not like I did this easily, it was a rough decision. I love coaching. It was a real hard thing to do. But I have to look out for my son as well."

Bancroft went 19-17 in his three years as head coach, including a trip to the CIF-Southern Section finals in which the Cougars fell to Ontario Colony, 41-14.

Trow Davis, the athletic director at Canyon Springs, said the school has posted the job opening with the Moreno Valley School District and hopes to make a hire in the coming weeks.

The resignation comes at a time when the football team is about to head back onto the field. Spring practices begin May 12 at Canyon Springs. But Bancroft insisted that he will help with weight training and practices while the school searches for his replacement.

"I want to make sure the kids are well taken care of," Bancroft said. "I am still going to be supporting the kids and the school. I am going to be at every home game and away game; I just can't put in the time to be head coach."

Davis said the school will make the position available to both staff and outside coaches. Bancroft said a few of his assistants are interested in the position.

"They are going to be getting themselves a decent ball club," Bancroft said.
