The former Washington High School star hit 7-of-12 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws to add to his previous accolades, which include Indiana Mr. Basketball and McDonald’s All-American. Indiana, which trailed by as many as 11 points before taking a 52-51 lead on a 3-pointer by Chase Stigall with 15:56 to play, built a 79-72 lead before Kentucky scored seven straight points for a 79-79 tie with 46 seconds remaining. Alex Young hit two free throws with 31.4 seconds left before Kentucky’s Corey Sorrell passed up an open 3-pointer and Scotty Hopson missed a 12-footer with eight seconds to go. Hayward grabbed the rebound and passed to Young, who drew the foul and added two more free throws with 1.3 left to give Indiana an 83-79 lead. Hopson flipped the ball in from the far side of half court at the buzzer for the final score. Shelvin Mack, a 6-3 forward bound for Butler University, led Kentucky with 24 points on 8-of-14 field goals, including four 3-pointers. He fouled out with 31.4 seconds to play. Kentucky jumped out to leads of 10-2 and 14-4 in the opening moments. The visitors were up 35-28 after 14 minutes, but Hayward hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull his team to within one point 5:09 before intermission. The teams then exchanged misses and turnovers before Sorrell drove the baseline for a 40-35 Kentucky lead 1:07 before the half. Morris knocked down a 22-footer with 49 seconds to go to trim the deficit, and following a turnover, Hopson scored on a buzzer-beating, fast-break layup to tie the score at 40. Mack had 13 points at the half on 4-of-6 shooting and 2-of-4 free throws. Kentucky shot 48.5 percent (16-of-33) in the first 20 minutes. Despite missing his last three shots of the half, Zeller scored 12 points and Hayward added 10. Indiana hit 14-of-31 field goals (45.2 percent). Kentucky turned the ball over 18 times in the half to 12 for Indiana. The second game of the home-and-home series will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Louisville Gardens in Kentucky. Indiana’s boys have won the past eight meetings, dating back to June 26, 2004. The neighboring states began playing each other in the boys annual event in 1940. |
