LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Louisville Trinity won its state-record 18th state high school football title, beating archrival Louisville St. Xavier 34-28 in overtime KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl Class 6-A state championship game in front of 15,696 fans at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Wes Weitlauf's 1-yard touchdown run gave Trinity the title after Shamrock defensive back Donovan Sims intercepted St. X quarterback Ben Zoeller's pass in the end zone on the Tigers' possession. Weitlauf's TD gave Trinity back the state title record after Highlands had tied the Shamrocks after winning its 17th state title in Friday night's Class 5-A state championship game. The wild finish capped a battle between the top-ranked Tigers (14-1) and the No. 2 Shamrocks (13-2). The two teams combined for 49 first-half points, then played to a stand-still in the second half before Trinity tied the game with 32 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Tim Phillips rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns and set up Weitlauf's game-winning score with a 9-yard run on Trinity's first play of overtime. Meanwhile Will Stein threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns for the Shamrocks. For St. X, Rolandan "Deuce" Finch rushed for 139 yards and Zoeller rushed for 56 yards and one TD and threw for 133 yards and two touchdowns and the aforementioned interception.
