Cameron Metzger wouldn't be denied.
Cameron Metzger followed up a 232 yard opening game performance last week, with a 184 yard night, including the game winning TD run with 11 seconds left, leading Charlestown to a 28-24 win over Brownstown. The two teams are thought to be the top two teams in the Mid-Southern Conference. The win was the 11th straight for the Pirates during the regular season.
Both teams struggled to score in the 1st half, ending the 1st quarter scoreless. But, Charlestown used a botched snap on a Brownstown punt in the 2nd quarter to setup a drive on the Braves' 25. Quarterback Damon Vest scored 3 plays later from 11 yards out for a 7-0 Pirate lead.
Brownstown came right back, and got their first score on Kelly Wagner's 5-yard run, tying things up at 7. Charlestown responded after a long kickoff return, only needing 5 plays to score again, this time a 20-yard touchdown pass from Vest to Jordan Williams. That score would hold going into halftime.
Brownstown came out of the locker room hot, outscoring Charlestown 14-0 in the period. Two touchdown runs by Cockerham put the Braves up 21-14 going into the final quarter. But, on the first play of the quarter, Metzger scampered 32 yards to tie things up.
Brownstown chewed up alot of clock during their nextd drive, but were unable to put the ball into the endzone. They were, however, able to kick a 32-yard field to go up 24-21 with 7:11 left.
Charlestown then turned to Metzger, giving him the ball on 6 straight plays, inlcuding converting on a 4th down inside Braves territory. Charlestown then got the ball down to the Brownstown 6 yard line, but faced another 4th down. The ball went to Metzger again, and he scrambled into the endzone with 11 seconds left for the winning score.
