Behind the passing arm of Graham Brown, New Albany was able to get a season opening victory over Providence 30-21, in HSGametime's Game of the Week.
Brown finished with 207 yards passing and 50 yards rushing, with 2 touchdowns total.
176 of those passing yards came in the 1st half, when the Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-0 lead. On the game's 3rd play, Brown hit Brett Martin with a 54-yard touchdown pass. Martin would end up with 5 catches and 92 yards receiving on the night. After a Providence fumble, Brown connected with Pierre Blackmon on a 17-yard score, and New Albany was up 14-0.
The Bulldogs then used a 16-play, 97 yard drive in the middle of the 2nd quarter to increase the lead. The drive was capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Melvin Posey.
Despite the rough start, Providence rebounded late in the 1st half, getting two touchdowns in less than a minute. The first was an 8-yard TD run by Ethan Cook with 2:19 to play, to finish off a 13 play drive. Then the Pioneers took advantage of a Bulldog error, as Burrous intercepted a pass intended for Posey, and took it all the way for a touchdown, bringing Providence back to 20-14 headed into halftime.
New Albany bounced back in the 3rd quarter with another lengthy drive, using short passes and runs to put the ball in the endzone. Posey again capped off the drive with a 1-yard run, pushing the Bulldog lead back to 13.
Providence cut the lead back to 6 in the 4th quarter, on a 1-yard run by Cook with just over 7 minutes left.
New Albany goes for 2 wins in a row against Castle next week.
