TOP STORIESPRP wins state baseball title over Lawrence County 4-109:36 PM EDT on Monday, June 16, 2008(WHAS11) - Trey Harper and Zach Cox combined for a 4-hitter and the PRP squeezed home enough runs to bring the Panthers the state baseball title, 4-1 over Lawrence County. It's the 4th title in the schools history and their 1st since 1996.
Cox was named tournament MVP after winning the semifinal game against Apollo in the morning, then getting the save in the championship game.
PRP scored two runs in the 1st inning after drqing 4 walks and getting a sacrafice fly from Taylor Banks. Lawrence County responded with one run in the 3rd. They also threatened in the 4th inning, when Brad Laney advanced to third after a double and wild pitch. But, after a pickoff throw got away, Laney was thrown out at home. PRP catcher Eric Bainer spiked the ball after tagging Laney out, leading to an argument between the Lawrence County coaching staff, PRP staff and umpires. LCHS assistant coach Travis Feltner was ejected after bumping an umpire.
PRP got 2 more runs in the bottom of the 6th on a Zach Osborne RBI single and a Bainer sacrafice fly. Cox then shut the door in the 7th on only 11 pitches.
PRP had reached the semifinals of the state tournament the past 2 seasons, and graduates 5 players of their starting lineup. |
