Former Curtis stars win Player of the Week Awards in college

Two former John Curtis football stars received big awards for their play in college this past weekend.

Joe McKnight, class of 2007 was named the Pac-10 conference's offensive player of the week. "McKnight, a junior from River Ridge, La., played a key role in USC's 18-15 road win at No. 8-ranked Ohio State. McKnight had 105 all-purpose yards as he rushed for 60 yards and added 45 yards on two receptions. On USC's dramatic 86-yard fourth-quarter scoring drive to win the game, McKnight accounted for 53 yards with 32 yards rushing and 21 receiving yards, plus a two-point conversion catch after the score." http://www.pac-10.org/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/091409aai.html

Brandin Jordan, class of 2005 was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference's Defensive player of the week. "Brandin Jordan led the Southern Illinois Saluki defense in a 31-28 loss to Football Subdivision School Marshall with a game-high 12 tackles, one sack and another game-high two tackles for a loss. He had a hand in forcing both of Marshall's turnovers. Jordan forced the fumble on MU's second offensive drive of the game and caused the interception on its first drive with his quarterback hurry." http://siusalukis.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/090709aaa.html

Week 2 observations

The biggest thing about week 2 so far is that it has my appetite whetted for Curtis-Salmen next week.

Sure, the Spartans were expected to win their first two and they have, but they are a very good team and will be a rare test for Curtis prior to the postseason.

Thibodaux's big win over Destrehan has them marked as a team to beat in 5A, while Brother Martin has done nothing to dispel its spot as a 5A favorite, perhaps a Catholic League team that could make a run at the Superdome?

And congrats to the Lusher Lions on their first win as a full time varsity squad, shutting out Pine.

Some head turners in week 1

Okay, so nothing should REALLY be a surprise in prep football's first week.

South Plaquemines and Belle Chasse were supposed to have a classic - and they did. Karr looks like it will be a force again this year. Curis - same old, same old. Brother Martin also looked very impressive, while Holy Cross did not.

But there were some head turners. It wasn't so much that Franklinton beat Amite, but the score, that stood out. West St. John knocked off St. James with a nice rally, Hahnville served notice, Destrehan survived and Shaw showed that the Catholic League may well have some old-school type of competition.
