TOP STORIESCurtis rolls to 2A title07:40 AM CST on Saturday, March 1, 2008HAMMOND, La. -- Nadia Collins scored 20 points and handed out 10 assists on Friday night to lead John Curtis to a 73-42 win over Donaldsonville for the Class 2A title at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state championship tournament at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Collins was named the game's Outstanding Player, sinking 9-of-15 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers. She also had five rebounds and two steals.
Teammate Kristi Bellock scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds while Trenell Spears had 13 and Lacey Huxen had 10.
Donaldsonville (32-3) was led by Kayla Mollere with 14 points, while Kendra Coleman had 12 points. This is the first title for the Patriots (29-9) in only their second trip to the Ladies Top 28.
Curtis led 19-11 in the second quarter before Thia Johnson's two baskets, Coleman's three-point play and Kacey Elphage's jumper gave Donaldsonville a brief 20-19 lead.
Curtis then outscored Donaldsonville 11-4 to take a 30-24 lead at the half.
The Patroits put the game away in the third quarter with a 15-4 run, using six points by Bellock and four by Collins. Curtis expanded its lead to 31 points, 65-34, in the fourth on two baskets by Collins, scores by Spears and Shaknocka Lewis and a pair of free throws by Huxen.
