Courtesy LHSAA The Wildcats came from behind to beat Jesuit 6-3, setting up a quarterfinal against No. 2 seed Dutchtown on Friday.
Destrehan won’t be the only metro team in Denham Springs, site of the Class 5A state tournament.
No. 1 Northshore continued its race to the title game, thrashing No. 16 Sulphur 12-2. It will meet No. 24 South Terrebonne, one of two surprise teams to earn its way Denham Springs. South Terrebonne dispatched No. 25 Fontainebleau 4-1.
The winner of the Northshore-South Terrebonne game could possibly meet No. 21 Rummel, the other surprise team. The Red Raiders outlasted No. 5 Airline 2-1 to reach the quarterfinals, where they’ll play the winner of the Captain-Shreve and Barbe game, which was postponed due to weather.
And then there’s St. Paul’s, the No. 6 seed, which battled rival Mandeville before coming out on top 11-9, setting up a quarterfinal match with No. 14 C.E. Byrd.
In 4A, one local school continues its push to one of the better athletic years in recent history. Belle Chasse took its No. 3 seed to St. Michael where the Cardinals earned a 7-6 win and a semifinal berth. Belle Chasse will play No. 2 seeded Zachary in Thursday’s semifinals in Shreveport.
Belle Chasse already won the 4A football title and the softball championship this year.
Holy Cross, however, won’t be making that trip. The No. 8 Tigers fell 7-1 to top-seeded Sam Houston.
In 3A, St. Charles Catholic continued its steamrolling of opponents, beating Kaplan 9-2. In three playoff games, the Comets have won by a combined 30-2. St. Charles will take on Notre Dame at 5 p.m. on Friday in New Iberia in the semifinals. |
