TOP STORIESNo. 3 Destrehan renews rivalry with No. 4 Ehret at home10:30 PM CDT on Thursday, October 2, 2008Stephen Robicheaux stopped the question before it was even finished.
He didn’t want to hear – or answer – anything having to do with a win streak or last year’s team.
Robicheaux’s sole focus this week: Preparing his Class 5A third-ranked Destrehan Wildcats for a home game against No. 4 Ehret.
Bradley Handwerger / WWL-TV.com Ehret's Rico Jones tries to elude Shaw's Darius Robinson (21) and Scott Fabre (42) while Eagles defensive end Christian Lacey hangs on the Patriots' quarterback. “If you look at our team, we’re really not as experienced as you think,” Robicheaux said. “The only experience is on the offensive and defensive lines. We have a lot more people that are first-time players.”
But none of that matters.
Destrehan (3-0) has won 18 in a row and Friday night in the river parish, Ehret (3-0) stands in the way of 19 straight.
It’s a rare matchup of top 10 teams during the regular season.
“I’ve been here 20 years, we’ve had this maybe seven times,” Ehret coach Billy North said. “It is a lot of fun. I told the kids Monday this will be a fun week. We’re going away to a nice venue. It’s going to be crowded. All kinds of people are going to cover it.
“It’s going to be a fun game.”
And according to both coaches, the game likely will be won at the point of attack.
Destrehan returns four starters on an offensive line that paved the way a year ago for Jordan Jefferson, Jericho Nelson and Damaris Johnson to do nearly anything they pleased.
Bobby Gorman, Kyle Wagner, Blaine Wagner, Ashton Duhe and Kurt Hebert will be charged with holding off Ehret’s front seven.
“I’m concerned about those experienced kids picking up our stunts and things like that and minimizing the kind of pressure we want to put on the quarterback,” North said.
But it’s not necessarily the Ehret defense that is keeping Robicheaux on edge. While he’s worried about a Patriots’ unit that is giving up only 11 points per game, it’s Ehret’s offense that stands out to Destrehan’s coach.
“The thing that scares me the most about them is not only is DeAnte Triplett running the ball, this guy (Craig) Johnson is leading the area in receptions,” said Robicheaux. “They are a legit top five team.”
Yet, it’s not the running back or receiver who scares Robicheaux the most. Instead, it’s Ehret quarterback Rico Jones.
Bradley Handwerger / WWL-TV.com Destrehan's offensive line pushes Ehret's defensive line during the two teams' battle in 2007. No. 3 Destrehan hosts No. 4 Ehret Friday night. “That’s the one thing that scares the heck out of me,” Robicheaux said. “Our coaches are real, real, real concerned with how he’s throwing the football.
“Sometimes we’ve played them and they’re one dimensional. They can do it all this year and that scares me.”
Likewise, North is disturbed by Destrehan’s offense.
“Their offense is good. Definitely underrated,” North said. “The quarterback throws the ball well. They have kids that can run. The offensive line they have this year is the best one I’ve seen since we’ve been playing them.”
All of those worries, however, haven’t kept either Destrehan or Ehret from enjoying the week.
North only hopes Friday night is as enjoyable.
“I’ve allowed them to enjoy this week of preparation and hopefully I’ll allow them to enjoy the game Friday night,” he said.
