Shaw finds an ally in the spring
MARRERO – Nearly two full calendar weeks into spring practice, one thing stands out clearly to Shaw head coach Scott Bairnsfather. “As we’re on our 13th day of practice this spring, it has been a tough 12 practices so far because of the lack of experience we have,” Bairnsfather said. “Most of our guys with experience have graduated.” Few other schools in the metro area will have as big a rebuilding project as Bairnsfather.

Jesuit falls 7-5 to Barbe in 5A finals
DENHAM SPRINGS – Jordan Rittiner sat in a metal folding chair, both hands delicately holding onto his royal blue baseball cap, his eyes staring out into nothing in particular. A year after leading Jesuit to a state championship from the mound, the junior left-hander tasted the bitterest kind of defeat Saturday night in Denham Springs. Jesuit couldn’t hold off Barbe either time it took the lead and fell 7-5 in the Class 5A state championship game.

Airline sinks Mandeville 9-5 in 5A baseball quarters
DENHAM SPRINGS – Mandeville won eight of its previous nine games heading into Friday’s Class 5A quarterfinal against Airline using timely hitting and good defense. Against the Vikings, those two traits all but disappeared as the Skippers stranded eight base runners and committed four errors in giving Airline the opening it needed to eliminate Mandeville 9-5.

Jesuit turns season around in time to reach 5A quarterfinals
It was late March on Banks Street and Jesuit had just dropped its ninth game of the season, falling to one game above .500 after a 13-3 loss to Rummel. The defeat also dropped the Blue Jays – the defending Class 5A state champion Blue Jays – to 0-2 in District 10-5A. A little more than a month and a half later and that same Jesuit team has lost only one more game and reeled off 14 wins, including nine straight.

Moving beyond Brady
Anyone who watched Holy Cross football a season ago likely sat in amazement at the things quarterback Chris Brady did. He had a nearly 6-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the regular season. He completed more than 65 percent of his passes. He threw for 2,634 yards and 26 touchdowns. And now he’s gone, along with nearly the entire offense.

North still appreciating spring drills at Ehret
MARRERO – Billy North remembers when houses and neighborhoods didn’t dot the landscape surrounding John Ehret High. He recalls when rabbits ran wild on the school’s practice field behind the main buildings and gymnasium. This fall will mark 22 years at Ehret for North, and still, the thought of spring practice at the Patriot Street campus excites him.

Jesuit holds off Holy Cross rally in playoff tuneup
Paul Lacassagne could have stayed in the game. So, too, could have Alex Lapara and Harold Toscano. And that was only for Holy Cross. Jesuit head coach Tim Parenton also likely would have let Kyle Tortorich and Alex Roeling continue to pitch.

Holy Cross shaves heads and burns stats on way to winning record
For the first time ever, Holy Cross is not involved in the Catholic League for baseball. To Greg Battistella, that meant only one thing heading into the 2008 season. “When we started the season, I made the schedule out knowing our district was not going to be what we were used to,” Battistella said. “We don’t have Jesuit. No Brother Martin. And No Rummel. The only way to prepare for the playoffs would be for me to schedule a tough pre-district. “I may have gone a little overboard with it, but it’s paying dividends now.”

Johnny Thomas dove to his right and corralled the ball into his glove. Without thinking, he rose up off the ground and threw a laser to first base. It didn’t necessarily end the game for Brother Martin, but in a way, it did. With two outs, Jesuit had nary the chance to mount a comeback.

Jesuit hoping its back on track
In three of the past four seasons, Jesuit has brought home the Class 5A state baseball title. The expectations, suffice it to say, are fairly high. So, with the Blue Jays off to a 13-9 start, including a 2-2 start to district play, those might be grumblings you’re hearing from Banks Street

Crusader turn around: Brother Martin winning with experience this year
Brother Martin opened district play with a win over Jesuit, but it wasn’t necessarily that the Crusaders picked up the win that sets it apart from any other game. It was how the Crusaders won – by beating Blue Jays’ pitcher Jordan Rittiner, who went 12-0 a year ago. And they won by coming through in a close game, taking it 3-1.

30-6 run helps Cox overcome 17-point deficit in 4A semis
LAFAYETTE – For nearly three quarters, Cox appeared finished, destined to end one game short of destiny. But sometimes, the good teams like things harder than they should be, and Monday night, in Lafayette’s Cajundome, the Cougars proved once more they’re the team to beat in Class 4A. Cox, down 17 points with a minute to play in the third quarter, went on a 30-6 run to take the lead, and then held off a late Carroll rally to win 62-59 and move into the Class 4A finals against O. Perry Walker on Friday at 8 p.m.

Helen Cox and O. Perry Walker can’t really call upon history on Monday to help them figure out what is known as the Top 28 – boy’s basketballs version of the Final Four. But don’t blame it on a lack of talent. Both schools, you see, haven’t even hit their five-year anniversary.
