(AP) -- Shoni Schimmel put on a show in the semifinals of the OSAA Class 5A state championships and No. 4 Hermiston beat No. 5 Wilsonville 83-64. The 5-foor-9 sophomore guard finished with 31 points on 12-for-20 shooting to go with eight rebounds and eight assists. Schimmel displayed pinpoint passing and fancy dribbling to go with a pair of three-pointers from well beyond the arc.
kgw.com Hermiston (24-4) jumped out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter on a deep three-pointer by Schimmel. The Wildcats (23-4) chipped away at the lead and a pair of Kellie Krueger baskets in the final 30 seconds of the second quarter cut the Bulldogs lead to 32-28 going into halftime. The Wildcats, the top seed from the Northwest Oregon Conference, compensated for their 17 first-half turnovers by shooting 11-for-21 (52%) from the field in the first two quarters. The Bulldogs, the top seed from the Intermountain Conference, opened it up in the second half, going on a 21-4 run midway through the third quarter. Hermiston scored 31 points in the period. Schimmel took over the second half, shooting 7-for-9, including 3 of 4 from 3-pointers. Sammantha McCloud scored 12 points for the Bulldogs and Sarah VonArx added 10. Melinda Ingalls lead the Wildcats with 17 points and Krueger and Alli Walter added 12 apiece. |
