TOP STORIESCoaches banned from recruiting at high schools05:44 PM PDT on Wednesday, May 21, 2008EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Like most football coaches across the nation, Oregon's Mike Bellotti has found other ways to occupy his time in the wake of new rules. They prohibit him from recruiting activities on high school campuses this spring. Unlike many of the others, though, Bellotti says he hasn't been affected much by the change. And while some like Alabama's Nick Saban and USC's Pete Carroll have been vocal critics of keeping head coaches off the road during the "spring evaluation" period, Bellotti is all for it.
Bellotti says "the bottom line is, it's an evaluation period. It's not a contact period." And unfortunately, he says, "a lot of coaches used it as a contact period." So this year, head coaches are prohibited from making visits during the spring evaluation period. A school spokesman says Oregon State's Mike Riley opposed the change. |
