TOP STORIESSix-foot girl wins battle to play hoops on boys' team11:49 AM PDT on Friday, September 12, 2008A six-foot tall girl basketball star won her battle to play in the boys' league at The Hoop in Beaverton, her lawyers announced Thursday.
Jaime Nared, a twelve-year-old who is already over six feet tall, was told in April by The Hoop that she could no longer play in its league because of a policy that prevents mixed-gender teams. Nared, a skilled player, had been playing on boys' teams since she was in third grade.
Jaime’s mother, Reiko Williams, said, “We never thought that in 2008, this kind of policy would exist and would prevent our daughter from playing just because she is a girl. We know what Jaime is capable of, so we are gratified that she can once again experience an appropriate level of competition and skill development.” The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette took over operation of The Hoop's facitilies in August 2008. After months of negotiations between Nared's lawyers and the YMCA, the two sides reached an agreement to allow Nared to continue to participate in the boys' league. Northwest Women’s Law Center attorney Janet Chung added, “Abandoning The Hoop’s discriminatory policy was the right thing to do. Now, Jaime and other talented girls like her can be judged on their merits, not based on an arbitrary policy.” |
