TOP STORIESBleachers closed at two Portland high schools due to danger09:55 AM PDT on Friday, October 19, 2007The bleachers at two Portland high schools could give way while packed with fans, due to faulty welding work, according to inspectors. That’s why authorities at Lincoln High School decided to condemn their bleachers and at Madison High School, officials put a precautionary closure in place until their inspection is completed.
Some temporary bleachers will be installed to get through football season and many fans will also have to just stand on the sidelines. In addition, the school district planned to move some of the games to PGE Park. "You know it's almost like arena football now. You're close to the game, close to the action," said Lincoln Football Coach Chad Carlson.
"This bleacher holds 4500 to 5500 people that amount up in there. It's just not worth the risk,” added Jeff Peeler, Athletic Director at Lincoln.
The annual inspection conducted in April flagged weaknesses in the welding underneath Lincoln’s bleachers.
Then, a follow-up analysis found that 80 percent of the welds inspected failed to meet American Welding Society Standards, 50 percent had major discontinuities, and three percent showed visual signs of cracks.
The timing, during the peak of football season, makes the situation even more difficult.
"If we could have done it in the summer we would have loved to, but this is the problem we're going to face,” said Matt Shelby with Portland Public Schools.
District officials added that while the football season continues, the bleachers in nine stadiums will be inspected for other potential risks. |
