TOP STORIESQueen of the gridiron06:18 PM PDT on Friday, October 24, 2008What a day for Clackamas Senior Kelsey Nisbitt. She was named homecoming queen and then got to suit up for the Cavaliers football game with Putnam. "I’m really excited because I actually have a few friends on homecoming court with me," said Nisbitt. "It’s going to be really fun. At halftime, they always have the cars that go around and this year I’m going to be in a football uniform, so it’s going to be fun.” Nisbitt is a wide receiver on the varsity football team. She’s played all four years for the Caveliers and she loves it. "Honestly, I think I’m a whole new person," says Nisbitt. "I really like, who I’ve become and I’ve made a whole bunch of new friends here on the team.” At 5-6 and 118 pounds, Kelsey is not big, but she has a big heart and a determined attitude. “She has to do all the things that the guys do”, says Clackamas Head Coach Joe Bushman. “The same drills, all the hitting and I think one thing she’s done a really good job of is earning their respect, because she does everything.” The players agree. “She’s very smart and she got the hang of it really quick”, says Ben Adler, who plays the same position at Clackamas. “She’s just got that heart and desire.” Clackamas Wide receiver Matt Nylen feels the same way saying, “she’s tough, she always bounces back. She’s just a player.” She's also a singer. “I enjoy doing the musicals”, says Nisbitt, “I love dancing, singing and acting. I do the musical every spring. I have choir concerts all throughout the year and then I do football in the fall.” It was flag football in a Jr. High P.E. class that grabbed her interest. Just this month, Kelsey grabbed her first pass in a varsity game against Lakeridge. “The play before, they were already chanting her name in the student section”, said Bushman, “I was feeling a little pressure. We’ve got to get her the ball.” “I heard the entire crowd cheering “Kelsey, Kelsey”,” said Nisbitt, “what is going on here? Everyone in the huddle was so excited.” Although Kelsey has caught the football bug she is going to leave it behind in college. “I think I’ve completed what I was looking to complete,” says Nisbitt, “and I think this is it for me, but I’m happy with it.” She is the Queen of the Court and the gridiron! |
