Baseball All-StatesRyan Westmoreland06:00 PM EDT on Saturday, June 28, 2008 The Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year for the second straight year, a few weeks after Westmoreland completed his sensational high school career he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the Major League amateur draft. One of the most outstanding multisport athletes Rhode Island high school sports has ever seen, Westmoreland was also an All-State soccer player and All-Division basketball selection. Before a slight arm strain kept him off the mound for the final two weeks of the high school season, he was the most dominant pitcher in the state with a 6-0 record and an 0.35 E.R.A. He only allowed two earned runs in 40 innings on the mound and struck out 89 of the 129 batters he faced. Despite those impressive pitching stats, his baseball future probably is more as an outfielder than a pitcher, so that he can be in the lineup every day. With great foot speed and bat speed, he hit .478 with 32 hits in 82 plate appearances, including four home runs. He scored 33 runs and was 14 for 15 in stolen-base attempts. He has yet to decide whether to sign a professional contract with the Red Sox or to attend Vanderbilt University in the fall.
