Softball All-StatesKelly Ryan06:00 PM EDT on Saturday, June 21, 2008 Ryan moves up to the first team this season after putting the finishing touches on a stellar high school softball career at Mount. Leading her team in every offensive category for each of the last three seasons and finishing with a career batting average of .420, the slap hitter batted .507 in the leadoff spot this spring, collecting two doubles, two triples and one out-of-the-park home run. Defensively, Ryan posted solid numbers as a pitcher, recording a 1.40 E.R.A. and striking out 256 batters in her two years on the mound. But even more impressive was her versatility as a fielder, as Mount coach Cliff Matthews also utilized his captain in center field, shortstop and first base. "I have been associated with Mount softball since 1996, and have never seen a more complete player on the field at our school," he said of Ryan. "She is an athlete that is highly skilled but never lost sight of the fact that fastpitch softball is a team sport, and as such always exhibited the highest standards of sportsmanship to both her teammates and competitors." |
