Eryn Wheeler Wheeler capped off her high school career with two more gold medals as the senior won both the 800 (2:15.37) and 1,500 meters (4:36.74) at the outdoor state meet.Brittney Lawson Ranked seventh in the country with her personal best of 165-0, achieved at the Rick Schomp Invitational, Lawson – who earlier this year captured the indoor state weight-throw title - also won the hammer event at the Cumberland Invitational (159-8), the Northern Divisional Championships (155-08) and the Class A Championships (150-03).Shannon Meehan The indoor state champ in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet 1 inch, Meehan added the outdoor state title to her resume.Hope 4x100 Relay Team This quartet, which won the 4x200-meter relay indoors, formed a record-setting combination at the Outdoor State Championships, where DaCruz, Marrow, Cheatham and Quiah posted a winning time of 47.90 seconds.Hope 4x400 Relay Team Hope finished third in the team standings at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Outdoor State Championships, and it was due in part to the Blue Wave’s victory in the 4x400, which the foursome also won at the indoor state meet.La Salle 4x800 Relay Team She had three different partners this time, all of them freshmen, but Christensen helped La Salle successfully defend its 4x800-meter title, as she, Keating, Meehan and Papazian combined to run a meet-record time of 9:15.67 at the Outdoor State Championships.Mike Gama Despite an off day at the state meet – two fouls and a fall, resulting in a 17th-place finish, Mike Gama is still the best hammer thrower in Rhode Island.Mike Intrieri This All-State football lineman and state runner-up in the shot put indoors contributed 10 points to the Bulldogs’ first state outdoor championship with a winning out of 53 feet, 3.5 inches.Craig Amado The only triple jumper to exceed 44 feet this spring, he soared 45 feet 9.5 inches at the state meet and won by 2 feet, 5.5 inches.Joshua Faboyede The Purple captain posted a state-meet double: discus (158-10) and hammer (204-08).Kenny Cheston After a fast start this spring, he went into a little slump but bounced back with a stirring sprint to the finish at the state meet and won by .01 second.Steve Perry The leading high jumper entering the state championships cleared 6 feet, 4 inches and won by two inches. Wesley DeChristofaro Third-seeded Wesley DeChristofaro saved his best jump for the state championship, leaping 21 feet, 5 inches for the title, three inches ahead of the runner-up. Nick Keeling The 2008 runner-up in the javelin qualified for the state meet in five events; won the javelin by more than 10 feet with a throw of 192 feet, 9 inches; finished sixth in the 200 and reached the final in the 100.James Strawderman He peaked at the Hendricken Invitational on May 30, breaking the state record with a vault of 15 feet, 3 inches, but James Strawderman had enough left to win the state championship a week later at 14 feet.Mike Read Finishing his first year with the track team, this sprinter was the No. 1 seed going into the state meet and the No. 1 finisher coming out.Xavier Rodriguez This versatile athlete ran the sprints and threw the javelin this spring.Kenneth Olivieri After injury-plagued sophomore and junior seasons, he “came into his own” this year.Andrew Springer The best high-school distance runner in Rhode Island history finished first in the 800 (1:56.26), 1,500 (3:54.02, state record) and 3,000 (8:29.35, meet record), and ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x800 relay at the state championship.Mike Braz The All-State 55 hurdles champion indoor won the outdoor title by .01 second with his lunge at the finish. Westerly 4x800 Relay Team This quartet ran together for the first time and shattered South Kingstown’s 1997 state record of 7:57.38 with their finish of 7:55.05.Mount Pleasant 4x100 Relay Team Injuries are part of track, so Mackenley Northecide took the baton from Ralph Biah and ran on a sore foot.Central 4x400 Relay Team The best 4x400 team in Rhode Island won the final event of the state championships by three seconds.
Erin Carmone After making her debut on the All-State cross-country team last fall, Carmone does the same on the indoor team after capturing the 3,000-meter title at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Indoor Track and Field State Championships.Samantha Chace Helping the Titans to a tie for third with Barrington at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Indoor State Championships, Chace captured two gold medals in just her second season of indoor track, winning the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:58.76 and the 1,500 in 4:46.02.
