Gama was only beaten once in the hammer throw this season against Rhode Island competition. Gama won the event at the Rick Schomp Invitational (214 feet 4 inches), the Central Division Championship (214-07), the Classical Classic (210-03) and the Class A Championships (222-06), before finishing third at the Hendricken Invitational (203-06). His throw of 222-06 at the Class A Championships was the third best throw in the country through June 1. At the state meet, Gama's heave of 219-11 was more than 15 feet farther than his closest competitor's.
