Mathews not only dominated the competition in the state this year, he broke a seven-year state record in the pole vault (14 feet 10 inches, Stephen Robin, Ponaganset) with an impressive leap of 15 feet even to win the state title by a foot. Mathews won the pole vault at the Rick Schomp Invitational (14-6), the Classical Classic (12-6), the Eastern Division Championships (14-0) and the Class D Championships (14-0).
