A runner-up in the states at 140 a year ago, Mathews was not to be denied this year in claiming the crown, and he went on to a second-place finish in the New Englands. Mathews was 28-3 this year, including first-place finishes in the South County tournament and the Chad Antoch Memorial. A four-year starter and Division II champion, Matthews’ career record was 108-9.
