High School Sports NewsDivision IV girls tennis: Seniors lead PCD to championship victory over Coventry09:35 PM EDT on Sunday, October 25, 2009PAWTUCKET – Last year they suffered the agony of defeat, but this year Lisa Brendlinger, Lynette Esteves, Sophie Hamblett and Alexandra Prentice made sure they and their teammates on the Providence Country Day girls tennis team made sure they would experience the thrill of victory. Related linksBrendlinger, Esteves, Hamblett and Prentice, a quartet of veterans, combined with freshman Alissa Musto to provide the four points PCD needed for its 4-1 victory over Coventry in the title match of the Interscholastic League Division IV girls team tennis tournament Sunday at Slater Park. Brendlinger, Musto and Esteves posted victories at first, second and fourth singles, respectively, while Hamblett and Prentice combined to capture the second doubles contest. The victory completed a 19-0 season for the Knights against Division IV competition and also allowed a group of senior starters to complete their high school careers as champions after losing in last year’s title match. “It’s a wonderful victory for the seniors,” said PCD coach Katie LaMantia. “They really have been the core and heart of this team. They have all worked so hard for this.” Brendlinger, one of the senior quintet, posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Coventry’s Haylee McHale at first singles. Musto and Esteves, like Brendlinger a member of the senior corps, also posted a straight-set singles triumph. Musto rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Casandra Thibeault and Esteves registered a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over the Oakers’ Sarah Karn. Hamblett and Prentice battled their way to a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Erica Thayer and Julia Chretien at second doubles. The duo of Kate Donovan and Mackenzie Richter gave Coventry its only point with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Christine Iannucci and Lydia Mozzone at first doubles. |
