Division II field hockey: Wheeler captures long-coveted title After three years of experiencing bitter disappointment, Wheeler left Cranston Stadium positively walking on air Sunday night, defeating Classical, 4-1, in the title game of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division II Field Hockey Championship before a crowd of close to 300.
High school highlights: Thursday, October 29 North Kingstown, the seventh seed in the Division I boys soccer playoffs, pulled off a major upset by defeating second-seeded and defending-champion Barrington, 2-1, in a quarterfinal match. Andrew Hess gave the Skippers a 2-0 lead with goals three minutes into the second and with 12:30 remaining. Barrington’s Anders Weiss scored with nine minutes left to get the Eagles within one. “They played totally phenomenal,” said Barrington head coach John Denham. “(North Kingstown head coach) Kyle Froberg had them absolutely ready to play.”

John Gillooly: It’s time to put competition in competitive cheerleading A few years ago the Interscholastic League recognized cheerleading as a varsity sport. The only official Interscholastic League competitions for cheerleading, however, take place at the end of the year, a one-day team championship meet and another day for the individual state meet.

Very, very intense.High school highlights, Saturday, Sept. 26 •With Narragansett ahead, 22-16, at the end of the third quarter, Central scored halfway into the fourth quarter on a Mike Washington 1-yard run and again with 3 minutes remaining on a 42-yard pass from Joey Diaz to sophomore Washington for a 28-22 win in Division III. Washington ran for 197 yards on 17 carries, caught two passes for 51 yards and scored twice. Cardinal Washington had an interception at the 1-yard line with seven seconds left in regulation to save the win.

High school highlights: Friday, Sept. 25 North Smithfield’s Roger Sherman ran for 180 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Northmen defeated Exeter/West Greenwich, 34-12, in Division IV football.

09/25/2009High school highlights: Thursday, September 24 •Trailing 1-0 in the second half, largely in part to the tremendous play of opposing goaltender Cody Gibb, West Warwick got back-to-back goals by Eder Valdez and Christian Medeiros and held on to defeat the Chieftains, 2-0 in boys soccer. Gibb kept Ponaganset in the game, stopping 13 of 15 shots, many of them of a difficult nature.09/24/2009Bill Reynolds: Sports lessons were life lessons for ex-South Kingstown and PC star Ray Johnson, who uses them to help battle kidney disease This is where Ray Johnson is on a beautiful morning: hooked up to a dialysis machine here in this building in Wakefield, only about a jump shot away from where he once led South Kingstown to back-to-back state titles back in the mid 1960s, back when he never lost a high school game in two seasons.

The game featured six lead changes. Aaron Brown scored two touchdowns for the Sentinels, one on a 26-yard pass from Tim Jamieson and another on a 14-yard toss. Eldridge finished with three scores for the Mariners. He also had TD runs of four and 14 yards.Mt. Hope continues to honor Raposa’s memory Christine Raposa got her first sense of just how much the community was behind her and her family at the first basketball game after her daughter’s death.
High school highlights: Thursday, September 17 Portsmouth’s A. J. Pollock, who scored the first touchdown on a 70-yard run, took it in again from 2 yards out for the game-winner in overtime as the Patriots defeated Hendricken, 27-21, in a Division I football game. Hendricken’s Michael Flanagan had 25 carries for 150 yards and scored two touchdowns. Flanagan, however, also fumbled. Robert Manning had 3 receptions for 33 yards for the Hawks, who missed on two field goal attempts –– one of which was blocked.
09/11/2009Football: Cranston East gets its season started right CRANSTON — Mother Nature made it a long night, but nobody on the Cranston East football team was complaining after the Division II Thunderbolt opened their season with a 27-13 victory over Division I St. Raphael in a nonleague Division I-II crossover Friday night at Cranston Stadium.
High school highlights: Classical's goalie stymies Warwick Sara Zanfagna was outstanding in goal, turning aside 20 of 21 shots, but the one goal that beat her — by Alexia Costa — proved to be the difference as Classical edged Warwick, 1-0, in a Division II-South field hockey game Tuesday in Warwick.
High school highlights: Toll Gate comes back from two games down to beat Chariho in girls volleyball Toll Gate came from behind twice and edged Chariho, 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 16-14) in Division I-South girls volleyball. The Titans scored the last four points in the fifth game. Morgan Neiley had 31 assists and three aces, and teammates Kelsey Howkins had 14 kills, three blocks and three aces for the Titans.

It was a pretty warm August day, although not nearly as steamy as it has been this week. The tryout started with a run, and Batek remembers getting dizzy. Then she started feeling a little nauseous.
