Rhody roster announced for R.I.-Connecticut football game EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Rhode Island will be looking for its first victory in seven years Saturday night (June 27) when 55 of the state's top senior football players travel to Renteschler Field in East Hartford, Conn., for the 11th annual Connecticut-Rhode Island Senior High School Football All-Star Game.
Cranston West baseball, Central Falls softball win Reynolds Sportsmanship awards The award is special because the only way a team can be selected is if it is nominated by either an opposing coach or a game official. Coaches cannot nominate their own teams, fans can’t vote for their favorite team. The nominations must come from people who are not cheering for a team, but are watching the way the team plays the game.

Westerly’s Springer now the nation’s best one-mile runner On Saturday, Springer ran the boys mile in 4 minutes, 2.70 seconds at the Midwest Distance Gala, in Lisle, Ill. The Westerly High School senior not only bettered his own his own state-record time of 4:08.79, but set a New England record as well.
John Gillooly: Springer was one of many high school athletes who made it a spring to remember I have often said with everything that’s going on in their lives, the spring can be the toughest season for high school students to stay focused on athletic achievement. Yet, somehow, the state’s high school athletes delivered a host of exciting, and often inspirational performances this spring.

For so many years in the SENE or as an independent we knew we had very good teams for Rhode Island, but we were never recognized for it,” Moses Brown coach Peter Sheehan said. “To be able to play in this game rather than watching from the stands made it a lot of fun.”

05/18/2009John Gillooly: Beisel, Sogar take R.I. swimming to a new level Elizabeth Beisel, the North Kingstown junior who was a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic swim team, won the 100-meter backstroke title and Laura Sogar, the Prout senior who is headed to the University of Texas in the fall, captured the 200-meter breaststroke crown at the Charlotte UltraSwim championships.
High school highlights: Scituate baseball beats North Smithfield ace He’s been nearly untouchable all season. Monday, however, Scituate got to him. North Smithfield ace Nick Narodowy, who pitched 46 innings without giving up an earned run, was charged with seven as the Spartans beat the Northmen, 7-4, in eight innings in a Division II-North baseball game.

04/19/2009High school highlights, Saturday, April 18 Olivia Hendricks pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts and Nicole Silva knocked in what proved to be the winning run with a single in the first inning as Mount St. Charles went on to defeat Cranston West, 3-0, in Division I softball. The win improved the Mounties’ record to 5-0. The Falcons slipped to 3-2. Sandoval singled in the first run in the fourth to start the scoring for the Crusaders. Prout goes 5-0 for the season. Vaughn Hayward struck out five in three innings for Mount St. Charles.

Brian McGreen led the Mariners with three goals05/12/2009High school highlights: Monday, May 11 La Salle’s Jordan Tingley held Mount St. Charles to its lowest hit total of the season (four) while striking out nine in the Rams’ 6-0 win over the Mounties in a Division I softball game. It was only the second loss of the season for the Mount, which fell to 8-2. On offense, the Rams’ Ashley Impagliazzo had three hits, scored two runs and drove in another in the victory.
