High school highlights: Lincoln wins 12th straight match in tennis
Lincoln avenged its only loss of the season, a 5-2 defeat to Cumberland on April 2, and in the process the Lions stretched their winning streak to 12 by beating the previously undefeated Clippers, 4-3, in Division II boys tennis.

Lincoln sophomore raises scholarship funds in memory of lost friend
Alyssa Brennan says her best friend, Marissa Lorea, sends her signs every day. There are the lady bugs that appear in Brennan’s bedroom every night. Each time Brennan starts her car, Lorea’s favorite song — “Bubbly,” by Colby Calliat — always seems to be playing on the radio.

Softball game will honor longtime North Smithfield coach and umpire
On Saturday, the North Smithfield and Lincoln softball programs will get together once again to remember two longtime contributors to Rhode Island high school softball.

Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the ninth, the Mount St. Charles baseball team rallied with a sacrifice fly by Josh Lancellotti (four RBI on the day) scoring Tim Coffey to tie the game.

CRANSTON — The Cranston West baseball team moved into a tie with Hendricken for the Division I-West lead with a 4-3 victory over the Hawks yesterday.

Nick Savickas and Jamal Horne each singled in a run, and Nate Izzo had two hits and two runs scored as the North Kingstown High School baseball team defeated South Kingstown, 3-1, in a Division I-South showdown.

Charlie Kwolak’s fielder’s choice RBI, knocking in Eric LaRoche tied the score 1-1 for Smithfield in the top of the sixth inning, but in the bottom of the inning, Woonsocket’s Justin Rainville led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on a ground ball and batterymate Derek Mayer insured the win for his pitcher with a single that gave the Villa Novans a 2-1 win.

Choices of great RIIL baseball games abound
With only a little over two weeks remaining in the R.I. Interscholastic League regular season, a lot of games these days have playoff implications. But on Tuesday, high school baseball fans will really have a tough time deciding where to travel for the biggest game of the day.

Rogers overcame an 8-4 deficit with four runs in the final two innings as the Vikings rallied for a 9-8 victory over St. Raphael in Division I baseball.

Softball: 'Bolts bats storm up comeback win over Broncos
CRANSTON — When the Cranston East softball team lost three players — one to injury, one for health reasons and another because of personal issues — all in one game a couple of weeks ago, coach Michael Rachiele said he was more than a little concerned.

High school highlights: Saturday, April 26
With two outs in the fifth inning and tied 4-4 with Hendricken, the North Kingstown baseball team strung together six hits in a row and plated four runners, then held on behind starting pitcher Cody Normand for the 8-5 win over the undefeated Hawks.

High school highlights, Friday, April 25
The battle of the top two baseball teams in Division II-North didn’t disappoint, as league-leading North Smithfield and second-place Mount St. Charles combined for 35 hits and 25 runs in a 14-11 win for the Northmen. The Northmen’s Matt Okruta had four hits and three RBI, including the game-winning, two-run triple in the ninth inning. Brian Van Pelt came on in relief in the sixth inning for the Northmen, holding the Mounties scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Brendan Barry and Nick Naradowy each had three hits for North Smithfield.
High school highlights: Thursday, April 24
Cranston East relief pitcher John Healy entered in the fourth inning, retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced, struck out six and scattered three hits that led to one earned run, which tied the score in the bottom of the seventh, but he got the win when Mike Dunphy hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the eighth for a 7-6 win over North Kingstown.

Purple’s first vs. Hawks is second to none
There are still almost two months left in the outdoor track season, but the Classical boys are already flying high after handing Hendricken what is believed to be its first loss –– ever –– in dual-meet competition.
High school highlights: Tuesday, April 22
Westerly gave up three runs in the top of the ninth inning but came back with three of its own in the bottom half and won it in the 10th, 4-3, handing Cumberland its first loss of the season in Division I softball.

It may be too early in the season to make a definite declaration, but we might have seen the dawning of a new era in the R.I. Interscholastic League’s lacrosse ranks on April 14.
High school highlights: Monday, April 21
Classical’s Josh Okolowitcz and Davies’ Dino Gomes were engaged in a pitchers’ duel, but Okolowitz helped his own cause with a double in the bottom of the third and scored the winning run on a two-out double by Justin Tabis as the Purple edged the Patriots, 1-0, in a Division II-South baseball game.

High School highlights, Saturday, April 19
East Lyme’s Don Elia scored with less than a second remaining to give his team a 12-11 win over La Salle in a nonleague boys lacrosse match. Elia received a pass from Sean Doherty just outside the crease and tucked it in for the victory. The Rams trailed 10-7 and tied it at 10 with 1½ minutes remaining on a goal by defenseman David Porcaro.

Scituate’s Audets defuse Davies’ bats
SCITUATE — The Audet sisters, Kristen and Shannon, combined to throw a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts to help lead Scituate (4-1) to a 7-4 triumph over Davies (4-2) in an early battle for Division III supremacy.
High School Highlights, Friday, April 18
Kristen Oh scored with 22 seconds remaining to give East Greenwich a 9-8 lead and goaltender Lauren Eckles saved a penalty shot with three seconds left to preserve the victory in a Division I girls lacrosse match. The Avengers led 8-4 with 18 minutes to play before the Patriots rallied to tie it, 8-8, on a goal by Amanda Smith with 46 seconds left.

John Gillooly: Diamond rivalries are set to heat up
Maybe it’s parity or maybe it’s just the unpredictability of playing early spring baseball in New England, but less than halfway through the regular season only 4 of the 49 Interscholastic League baseball teams came into yesterday’s action with undefeated records — and even one of those teams played a tie game.
High School Highlights, Thursday, April 17
Sophomore Kameron Luther belted a pinch-hit grand slam in the top of the ninth to break a 9-9 tie and give the Mount St. Charles baseball team a 13-9 victory over Johnston in Division II-North. Mount, now 7-1, scored eight of its nine runs on home runs. Other homers for Mount came from Ryan Levesque (solo), Chris Ford (solo) and John Guay (two-run).

In a pitchers’ duel, Portsmouth’s Ryan Westmoreland allowed only two hits and struck out 13 in seven innings. La Salle’s Joe Charest had one less “K” and allowed only two hits in five innings but took the loss as his defense committed five errors in a 4-1 Patriots win. John Pedrotty had three RBI, all coming on a bases-clearing double in the second inning.

Baseball: Portsmouth-Cranston West lives up to expectations
CRANSTON — The fans and pro scouts that flocked to Cranston West yesterday expecting to see a matchup between two of the top pitchers in Rhode Island — Cranston West All-Stater Dan Hopkins versus Portsmouth All-Stater John Pedrotty — were initially disappointed, as Pedrotty didn’t pitch in the nonleague contest.

Saints' Dunbar accepts player of the year award
Stanley Dunbar, the All-State star quarterback and defensive back who keyed St. Raphael’s drive to the Division I state football title last fall, was named recipient of the Gilbane Trophy as the Providence Gridiron Club’s Rhode Island High School Football Player of the Year.

Olympian Chudy among Woonsocket Hall of Fame inductees

High school highlights, Monday, April 14
Sean Furney pitched a shutout and Mark Melchiori provided the game-winning hit and threw a runner out at the plate as Pilgrim edged Warwick, 1-0, in Division I baseball. Warwick’s only threat came in the third inning when Josh Cliff tried to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park homer but was thrown out at home by Melchiori. Pilgrim scored in the top of the seventh when Kevin Stenhouse singled, went to third on Mike Nadiger’s double and scored on Melchiori’s single. Furney scattered five hits and fanned five. Kevin Dale was the tough-luck loser, finishing with a complete-game, five-hitter with five strikeouts.
Four sports become victims of budget-cutting at URI
The Rams have eliminated men’s tennis, men’s swimming and field hockey from their varsity lineup, and gymnastics had already been dropped.

Some late inning fireworks, in the form of a three-run homer by Kevin Woodcock, coupled with less than perfect defensive play led to an 8-7 comeback win for the Coventry baseball team over Pilgrim.

EAST PROVIDENCE — In a rematch of last year’s state lacrosse championship, defending state champion Bishop Hendricken dominated runner-up Providence Country Day, 10-1, yesterday at PCD.

East Greenwich sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning and came away with six hits and five runs as the Avengers erased a 6-2 deficit en route to a 7-6 win over Rogers in Division II softball.

The Wheaton softball team (21-7, 7-3) is off to its best start in five years, has won 20 games for the 15th consecutive season and has moved up to third place in the NEWMAC standings with six conference games to play.

Saint Michael's Wakem named goalie of the week
Saint Michael's College senior Courtney Wakem (Tiverton) was the Northeast-10 lacrosse goalkeeper of the week and the ECAC Division II goalie of the week for her play in an 18-3 victory over Assumption and a 24-6 rout of American International.

Foundation focuses on fortifying athletes’ skills
Identifying sportsmanship, character education, ethics and leadership as key components in the development of student-athletes, the Principals’ Committee on Athletics last fall established the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Foundation to assist member schools with programs that promote those qualities.
Westerly will pay tribute to two track champions
On Nov. 7, 1993 within a half-hour of each other and along the same rolling Bryant University course, Emily Selvidio and Jamey Vetelino were crowned the R.I. Interscholastic girls’ and boys’ individual state champions, respectively.
Track coaches clinics coming Wednesday
