High School Sports NewsSaints' Dunbar accepts player of the year award10:57 AM EDT on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 St. Raphael quarterback Stanley Dunbar was honored with the Gilbane Trophy as the Providence Gridiron Club’s High School Football Player of the Year last week. > Providence Journal / Gretchen Ertl Stanley Dunbar, the All-State star quarterback and defensive back who keyed St. Raphael’s drive to the Division I state football title last fall, was named recipient of the Gilbane Trophy as the Providence Gridiron Club’s Rhode Island High School Football Player of the Year. The award was presented at the Club’s annual awards dinner last week. Dunbar, who plans to play junior college football at Dean College next fall, ran for 1,430 yards and scored 19 touchdowns for the Saints last fall. The other major award winners honored at the dinner were St. Raphael coach Mike Sassi as Coach of the Year and La Salle’s Neal Rooney, as the Lineman of the Year. Dunbar also was honored along with Warwick Vets’ Bob Bentsen, Cranston East’s Geoff Gilson, Central’s Howard Robinson and Classical’s Emmanuel Tutu as the Back of the Year in their respective divisions. Rooney, Tolman’s Dave Bedard, Shea’s Mike Smith, East Greenwich’s Tom Davis and Classical’s Patrick Onye were honored as the Lineman of the Year in their respective divisions. Sassi also was honored as the Division I Coach of the Year. The other divisional Coaches of the Year were Warwick’s Mike Nappa in II-A; South Kingstown’s Bruce Tardiff in II-B; Narragansett’s Dick Fossa in Division III and Central Falls’ Moe Jackson in Division IV. |
