High School Sports NewsSoftball game will honor longtime North Smithfield coach and umpire10:57 AM EDT on Thursday, May 8, 2008On Saturday, the North Smithfield and Lincoln softball programs will get together once again to remember two longtime contributors to Rhode Island high school softball. The Pat Dowling/Joe Skrzat Memorial Softball Game will be held at Saylesville Park, in Lincoln, in honor of the late North Smithfield coach and umpire. The Gold and Green middle chool game will be held at 5:15 p.m., followed by the Gold and Green high school game at 7. Teams will consist of a combination of North Smithfield and Lincoln players. Admission is $5. Those proceeds, along with money from a raffle that night, will go to a scholarship fund in both Skrzat’s and Dowling’s names, which made it possible for two seniors from each program to receive scholarships last spring. “This game means a lot to me,” Lincoln High coach Jon Bruckner said. “I was friends with both guys. They did so much for the sport, as coaches and officials. I never want what they did to be forgotten. “The girls from both schools do a tremendous job putting this all together,” he added. “Georgeann Bourgeois, of North Smithfield, coordinates much of it, and our parent and player donations make it all come together. It means so much to both communities and the families of both men.” -CAROLYN THORNTON |
