One Rhode Island track record was broken over the weekend at the annual Hartford Invitational meet in New Britain, Conn., as Westerly's Andrew Springer broke a 34-year-old standard in the boys two-mile run. Springer's winning time was 9 minutes, 14.96 seconds, bettering the hand-held mark of 9:22.2, set in 1974 by Middletown's Mike Murphy. Before Springer broke the mark, the record was the oldest track record in the state.
