High School Sports NewsDivision II field hockey -- Moses Brown wins third consecutive championship08:18 AM EST on Monday, November 3, 2008CRANSTON - When seniors Sherilyn DeStefano, Leah Saris and Mia Rotondi became the new leaders of the Moses Brown field hockey team this season, they delivered a simple message to the underclassmen. "We wanted to tell them that anything is possible,’’ said DeStefano, who had already been a part of two championship teams with the Quakers. "We told them that if they follow their hearts, follow their dreams, they can achieve whatever they want." With that, DeStefano and her teammates dreamed big and achieved big, capturing Moses Brown’s third straight Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division II State Championship with a 3-0 victory over Wheeler Sunday afternoon at Cranston Stadium. "It’s pretty incredible," said DeStefano, who was named the Quakers’ tournament MVP. "Every year, it’s a different team, and we just come together. We have an excellent coach . . . a fabulous coach [in Leslie Caito-Jones]. We’re an extremely close-knit team. We do everything together, and it’s just a lot of fun being out there with these girls." Moses Brown, which also defeated Wheeler en route to each of its first two Division II crowns, wasted no time taking the lead yesterday, getting on the board less than 2 1/2 minutes into the game on a goal by all-tournament selection Liza Green that was set up by Saris. DeStefano took a feed from Corey Robinson and made it 2-0 with five minutes remaining in the first half. A little less than midway through the second period, Wheeler goalie Alicia Piraglia came out to make a save on a shot by Green, but Erin Mullins got to the ball first and knocked it into the net for the Quakers’ final goal. Meanwhile, first-year varsity keeper Jane Lupica kept the Warriors out of the net, making 12 saves and earning all-tourney honors in the process. “It’s a learning process - the discipline, the hard work and all that comes with being a true championship team,“ Caito-Jones said. “We really thrive on the legacy of the champion, and every year we just continue to carry that on. And I think the seniors did a phenomenal job -- Sherilyn, Leah and Mia. They all played a role, and I’m just really proud of them.” MOSES BROWN (3): Liza Green, Sherilyn DeStefano, Erin Mullins; assists – Leah Saris, Corey Robinson, Green. WHEELER (0). Halftime – 2-0.
