High School Sports NewsDivision I field hockey: North Kingstown wins title with a double-overtime win over Bay View07:57 PM EST on Sunday, November 2, 2008CRANSTON – North Kingstown field hockey coach Julie Maguire thought her team would do well this season. She even thought her players were capable of making it to the Final Four. But did they have it in them to capture another state championship? Although they needed two overtime periods to do it, the Skippers answered that question affirmatively Sunday afternoon, defeating Bay View, 1-0, in the title game of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division I Field Hockey Championship at Cranston Stadium. “I think what actually happened within the team itself is that they started to play more as a team and less as individuals as the season went on,” said Maguire, whose Skippers have won five out of the last seven state crowns. “And I think that’s what really put them over the top.” Cassie-Raye Stuart came through with the game-winner with just 17 seconds remaining in the second 7-on-7 10-minute overtime period, finishing off a breakaway attempt by teammate Megan Greene. “I don’t know, I saw Megan running up that field, and I was like, 'I’m going to get there for her and make it happen,’ “ said Stuart, a senior tri-captain with Tory Dolce and Melissa Barry. “I just hit it, closed my eyes and hoped it went in.” “They play together nicely,” Maguire said of Stuart and Greene, her top two scorers this season. “They look for each other nicely which is that piece of unselfishness that you always want. I had Alexis [Ward] in there with Megan Greene [in the first overtime] and they were passing nicely, but Alexis started getting tired. And Cassie went out in that overtime with some really fresh legs. She has great endurance, so I was hoping we’d get a little breakaway.” Meanwhile, the always-steady Melissa Barry prevented Bay View from converting on any of its opportunities, finishing with five saves. The Skippers also received a standout performance, especially during the extra sessions, by junior Hannah Farrelly, who was named North Kingstown’s tournament MVP. “Hannah Farrelly really defensively stepped it up,” Maguire said of the first-year varsity player. “All those Catie Colucci big hits that were going down the field, Hannah would not only come up with it, but carry it 10 or 15 yards and then distribute it to her teammates. So I thought Hannah Farrelly played the game of her life.” NORTH KINGSTOWN (1): Cassie-Raye Stuart; assist – Megan Greene. BAY VIEW (0). Halftime – 0-0. End of regulation – 0-0.
