High School Sports NewsTuesday Night Lights wrap-up -- Kapstein and Tiverton move on07:53 AM EST on Wednesday, December 3, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Zach Kapstein rushed 24 times for 173 yards and three touchdowns and Colby Marks ran 38 yards for another touchdown to lead Tiverton to a 31-20 victory over visiting Moses Brown in a Division III semifinal football game last night. Mark Brinkman added two field goals and a point-after kick for the Tigers. Joshua Gilkenson had an 80-yard kickoff return, Daril Geisser caught a pass from quarterback Andrew Romano for a 77-yard TD run, and Luc Vernerey made his way into the end zone on a 24-yard run for Moses Brown’s three scores. Anjuwon Spence added two point-after kicks for the Quakers. Tiverton plays Johnston in the Division III Super Bowl on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Cranston Stadium. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Alfred Georgio ran for 185 yards and two touchdowns as top-seeded Exeter/West Greenwich earned a trip to the Division IV Super Bowl for the second consecutive season with a 22-18 victory over North Providence. Exeter/West Greenwich will play second-seed Middletown. The teams met back on Sept. 19 with the Scarlet Knights posting a 22-7 victory. Georgio, a sophomore, had a pair of 20-yard scores while Adam Sweeney added a 4-yard score as EWG raced out to a 22-6 lead at the half. Georgio and Sweeney each had two-point conversion runs. Ray Criner scored twice for North Providence, which scored midway through the fourth quarter to cut the lead to four, but the Cougars had to punt on their final possession and the Knights ran out the clock. •Middletown is returning to the Division IV Super Bowl for the second time in three years as the second-seeded Islanders pounded out a 28-6 win over Hope in the semifinals. Middletown did all of its scoring on the ground as the Islanders got touchdown runs from Nate Kivlehan (3 yards), Andrew Ponte (1 yard), Rico McCray (28 yards) and Dylan Gracia (5 yards). Stephen Wehbey scored Hope’s only touchdown on a 6-yard run. •Quarterback Brandon Parillo returned a kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown and threw a 20-yard pass to Gregory Doutre for another TD to lead Johnston to a 22-6 win over Narragansett in a Division III football playoff game at Chariho High School. Mike Conti added another touchdown with a one-yard run and David Galligan caught two two-point conversion passes from Parillo for the Panthers. Conti finished with 103 yards rushing, 9 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for Johnston. Galligan and Michael Soto each had six tackles and combined on a quarterback sack, and teammate Nick Pistacchio had an interception in the end zone for the Panthers to end the game. Peter Smurro got into the end zone on a five-yard run for Narragansett’s six points. Johnston plays Tiverton in the Division III super Bowl on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Cranston Stadium. SPOTLIGHT •Electra Smith had a game-high 17 points to lead R.I. School for the Deaf to a 36-21 win over Barrington Christian Academy in girls basketball. •Jordan Marcotte had a game-high 23 points and Joe Gareri added 14 to help Rhode Island School for the Deaf boys basketball team defeat Barrington Christian Academy, 51-30, and improve to 1-1 overall. Isaiah Hoffinger led Barrington Christian Academy with 19 points. |
