Lincoln (8-1-1), the only team to defeat East Greenwich (9-2-1), moved into a second-place tie with North Kingstown. April Daugherty had two goals and an assist for Lincoln while Colleen Moran and Jenna Masnyk each had a goal and an assist. Lincoln goalie Jessica Borden made seven saves for the shutout. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •La Salle scored three first-half goals, then held off a Chariho comeback in the game’s final 15 minutes as the Rams remained unbeaten (10-0-2) with a 3-2 victory in Division I boys soccer. William Van Noppen, Eric Neves and Jose Paulo scored in the final 23 minutes of the first half to give the Rams a 3-0 lead. Chariho got a goal from Nick Dubee with 15:12 to play and Nick LaBier scored four minutes later to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Chargers couldn’t tie it in the final 11 minutes. •When a team dominates possession time and holds another to one shot, it usually equates to a victory. But that’s not how the ball bounced yesterday in a Division I boys soccer match, in which East Providence defeated Central Falls, 1-0. Senior Helder Andrade, who played for the Warriors last season and became eligible for his first game with the Townies yesterday, got control of the ball, split two defenders and got off East Providence’s only shot, which found the back of the net. Central Falls put 18 shots on net, but EP’s Aldair Lopes stopped every one. •Division III-North leading Davies survived a scare from Rogers as the Patriots scored twice in the final nine minutes for a 2-1 victory over the Vikings in boys soccer. Seide Richemond tied it at 1-1, scoring on a penalty kick with nine minutes to play. Josue Almanzar had the game-winner on a breakaway with three minutes left. •East Greenwich junior Nick Ross won the boys’ division at Saturday’s Woods Trail Cross Country Run in Thetford, Vt. Ross outkicked Westerly’s Andrew Springer by one second to finish in 16 minutes, 53 seconds. Springer came in at 16:54. Ross and Springer went head-to-head twice earlier this season, with Springer winning both races. Hendricken won the boys’ team title with 169 points. In the girls’ race, Coventry’s Jenna Riley was the top Rhode Island finisher, taking third with a time of 20:12. The Oakers had the best showing among local teams, finishing eighth. SPOTLIGHT •Tyler Oliveira scored off a crossing pass from Dylan Mello 18:57 into the second half to lead the Portsmouth boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Mount St. Charles. Eric Mozynski made 21 saves for the Mounties. •Mt. Hope’s Anthony Hill raced down the right side of the field with two minutes remaining and drilled a shot past the Woonsocket goalkeeper to give the Huskies a 2-1 victory in Division I boys soccer. The Villa Novans took a 1-0 lead on a first-half goal by Patrick Phontharaksa. Mt. Hope tied it in the second on a score by Matthew Sousa. •Ian McGarty took a crossing pass from Nathan Lapedis and volleyed the ball into the net at the 26th minute of the second half to give Barrington a 1-0 victory over Cumberland in Division I soccer. •Dan McSally scored 3:30 into the game, then added another goal at 21:50 as Narragansett moved past Pilgrim into fourth place in Division III-South boys soccer with a 2-1 win over the Patriots. •Sherilyn DeStefano netted a pair of goals and Liza Green finished with a goal and an assist as Moses Brown stayed undefeated (12-0) with a 3-1 victory over Classical in Division II field hockey. •Renee Altamari scored the only goal, with the help of MacKenzie Avadesian, as Prout nipped Westerly, 1-0, in girls soccer. |
