High School Sports NewsTop hockey squads make for twice the fun11:53 PM EST on Thursday, February 7, 2008Hockey fans will have a chance to see the state’s top two high school teams on the same card twice over the next seven days. The first opportunity to see Mount St. Charles and Hendricken, 1-2 respectively in the current Interscholastic League Division I standings, is tonight when the Mounties and Hawks stage their third and final regular-season meeting, at 7:30 at Adelard Arena. Next Thursday night, the Mounties and Hawks will take part in a special high school hockey night at the Dunkin Donuts Center, with Hendricken meeting Moses Brown and Mount St. Charles taking on La Salle. Hendricken and Moses Brown will open The Dunk program at 6 p.m., followed by the La Salle-Mount St. Charles game at 8. Admission for the doubleheader is $5. Mount’s almost there There’s still a month remaining, but the Division I regular-season title will be virtually settled tonight if Mount St. Charles posts another victory over Hendricken. The Mounties are sitting atop Division I with a 10-0-1 record that includes 6-3 and 4-1 victories over Hendricken. Those two losses are Hendricken’s only RIIL setbacks this season, but last Saturday night the Hawks were held to a 2-2 tie by Toll Gate. So now the 9-2-1 Hawks are two games behind Mount St. Charles in the loss column with only four remaining, including tonight’s contest. No team unscathed And then there were none — as in no undefeated teams in Division II. North Kingstown and Portsmouth went into last weekend’s action as the only teams in the division without a loss, but by late Friday night there were no undefeateds left. Matt Hayes’ third-period goal, his second tally of the game, provided Cumberland’s margin of victory as the Clippers dropped North Kingstown from the unbeaten ranks with a 4-3 victory at Adelard Arena Friday night. At the same time, North Kingstown was suffering its first loss of the season, in Woonsocket, and Smithfield pushed Portsmouth out of the undefeated ranks with a 6-1 victory over the Patriots at Portsmouth Abbey. Cody Lang’s two goals sparked the Sentinels. The North Kingstown and Portsmouth losses tightened the regular-season title race. Only four points separate the top four teams in the division. North Kingstown still is on top with a 10-1-1 record and 21 points. But the Skippers have played one more game than Portsmouth, which is three points off the pace at 8-1-2. Cumberland, which has played 12 games, is tied for second with 19 points and (9-2-1). The victory over Portsmouth on Friday night, followed by a 2-1 triumph over St. Raphael on Saturday, put Smithfield back in the thick of the race. The Sentinels, the defending Division II state champions, trail North Kingstown by three points but have played one fewer game than the Skippers. NK and the Sentinels meet tomorrow night at Smithfield. Goals leaders Ponaganset’s Derek Rogala and Cranston East’s Brian Fay are the state’s individual goal-scoring leaders with 26 apiece. Like father, like son Speaking of Mount St. Charles, three members of this year’s team are sons of former Mount players who played for head coach Bill Belisle during the early years of Belisle’s head-coaching career, back in the late 1970s and early ’80s. John Guay is the son of former Mount and Providence College star Paul Guay; sophomore Cameron Hadfield is the son of L.J. Hadfield, who played on Belisle’s teams in the late ’70s, and freshman Trevor Plante is the son of Dennis Plante, a Mount All-Stater in the late ’70s. Bay View getting close Bay View can assure itself of the top seed in the Division I state girls tournament and clinch at least a tie for the regular-season title if the Bengals maintain their perfect record with two victories this weekend. The Bengals, 11-0 in league play, meet Lincoln School/PCD tonight at the Smithfield Arena, then host second-place Mount St. Charles tomorrow night at the Cranston Rink. If the Bengals win twice this weekend, they will be three games ahead of Mount St.Charles in the loss column with only three remaining. But this season, Bay View posted comfortable margins of victory in its first two games against the Mounties — a 7-3 victory on Dec. 1 and a 6-3 triumph on Dec. 28. Those two setbacks are Mount St. Charles’ only losses this season. Bianca Bogda, Kayla Robidoux and Brittany Resendes have led Bay View with 36, 33 and 30 points, respectively. |
