High School Sports NewsLa Salle’s girls volleyball team keeps on winning with triumph over Coventry01:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, October 7, 2008PROVIDENCE — And another one bites the dust. Queen’s 1980 rock song has become a fitting tune for the La Salle girls volleyball team, because every time the Rams step on the court, another opponent bites the dust. Not only did the seemingly invincible Rams defeat Coventry in a Division I-Crossover battle between the top-two teams in each division last night, but the Rams did it in sweeping fashion, winning by the scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-19. La Salle has swept all of its opponents so far this season, having won all 33 of the sets in which it has played in. The Rams improved to 11-0 with last night’s triumph, and first-year coach Jadine Ferri believes that La Salle has the potential to win every set this year. “That’s our goal,” Ferri said. “That’s what they said at the beginning of the season. They want to go the whole season without losing a set.” That is a lofty goal, but no team has been able to derail the Rams yet, and they have played every team in Division I that has fewer than four losses. “They are doing a very good job at trying to achieve it,” Ferri said of the Rams’ objective. “I’m very proud of them.” “That is something we’ve thought about, but I don’t think it really matters,” La Salle tri-captain Samantha Elliot said of winning every set. “Our goal is to [defend] the state title.” The loss dropped Coventry to 8-2 and the Knotty Oakers are now tied with North Kingstown for first place in Division I-South. “I don’t think we played to the best of our ability and that was probably because we ran into a buzz saw,” Coventry coach Leo Bush said. La Salle tri-captain and outside hitter Breanna Boyer dominated the first set, tallying seven of her game-high 15 kills in the opening stanza. La Salle jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the opening tilt and never let up. “She’s a great all-around player — passer, hitter, everything,” Elliot said. “She leads by example,” Ferri said of Boyer. “She’s a great captain. She doesn’t have to say much but she proves whatever she does on the court.” Coventry put up a much better fight in the final two sets. “We were able to spread out our offense a little bit more,” Bush said of the final two sets. “In the first set, they slowed us down so much, especially with their serve. … In the second and third set, I thought we were able to kick and fight and get our way back into the match a little bit. They are such a good serving team that it was really able to cause some problems on our end in the serve-receive.” Alycia Broccoli (12 digs, 8 kills, 4 blocks), Jessica Imoni (6 kills, 2 digs), Sara Biondo (5 kills, 5 digs, 1 ace), and Stephanie Carlu (11 digs, 6 blocks, 2 aces) kept Coventry in the match. “Alycia’s a good player,” Bush said. “She has the ability, especially up at the net, to control the match. … Stephanie Carlu has been a fantastic blocker. She has tremendous athletic ability. She has great hands, too. … Our setter, Hannah Cole, is only a sophomore but she is running a pretty tough offense to run. She’s been phenomenal for us. Our two outside hitters, Jess Imondi and Sara Biondo, they’ve been solid, too.” Along with Boyer, right-setter Jessica Burr (8 kills, 5 aces), All-Stater and the 2007 state finals MVP Janet Pressler (10 kills) and setter Elizabeth Lally (31 assists) were La Salle’s standouts last night. “We knew that they were a good team so we knew that we really had to try to do our best and do everything we could to win,” Elliot said. “Coventry had a really good job. They are definitely one of the better teams that we’ve played.” “I consider this a big win,” Ferri said. “We just had a big win over North Kingstown on Friday night and [Coventry] came ready to play today expecting the same type of game so I consider this a huge win. Hopefully we keep on trucking.” Bush said that he hopes that Coventry and La Salle can meet again in the state championship match. La Salle eliminated Coventry in the quarterfinals of the playoffs last season. |
