High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Perfect game, 19 Ks for Portsmouth's Westmoreland09:13 AM EDT on Thursday, May 1, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Senior Ryan Westmoreland pitched a perfect game and struck out 19 to lead the Portsmouth baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Barrington in Division I-East. The Patriots, who improved to 11-0, scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning on RBI singles by Brian Shelburne and Chris King. Westmoreland’s no-hitter was the first of his career. He improved his record to 5-0 and has a 0.41 ERA this season. He has given up just six hits and two earned runs and has 79 strikeouts. Opposing pitcher R.J. Shea also tossed a complete game for the Eagles despite the loss. WINNER’S CIRCLE •Eric Papa's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning pulled Scituate even with Burrillville, 4-4, but the Broncos scored the game-winning run in the fifth as Nick Haffner scored on an outfield error with two outs in a Division II-North baseball game. Pitcher Cam Leduc got the complete-game victory. •Dylan Ducharme led off the eighth inning with a walk and pinch-runner Mike Paine scored on Kyle Traghella’s single as Tolman rallied for a 5-4 victory over Central in Division II baseball. Traghella finished with two singles and three RBI. Jeff Salcedo had a two-run triple for Central. •Moses Brown scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning on a pair of botched bunts, and Graham Tyler left the tying run on third base in the bottom of the seventh as Moses Brown held off Tiverton, 3-2, in Division I baseball. Tiverton ended Tyler's shutout bid on Ian Destremp's two-run double, but Tyler got the final out on a strikeout. •Emily Branch pitched a five-hit shutout with five strikeouts in her first varsity start to lead the North Kingstown softball team to a 1-0 victory over Mount St. Charles. The game-winning run scored in the bottom of the fifth when pinch runner Caitlin Sugrue stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball. •East Providence scored two runs in the top of the first inning on RBI by Nate Lovett and Brian Soderberg en route to a 2-1 victory over Middletown in a Division I-East baseball game. Soderberg pitched a complete-game two-hitter. •Greg Fallon, Ben Schmidt and Dan Ballou each scored two goals as North Kingstown handed Prout its first loss of the season with a 9-6 victory in a Division I boys lacrosse crossover. North Kingstown is now 5-2 in Division I while Prout falls to 6-1 in Division I-A. Fallon also recorded three assists. Mike Young had four goals for Prout. •Brian McGreen scored his second goal of the game in the fourth overtime as Narragansett stunned PCD, 7-6, in a Division I boys lacrosse game. Narragansett had to rally from a 5-3 halftime deficit to force overtime as the Mariners scored late in regulation. Mark Bolster and Sam Carpenter also scored twice for Narragansett, while Dan Iannucci had a goal and three assists. Alex Patinkin had three of the six PCD goals. •Marielie Martinez drew a bases-loaded walk to score Mariah Sherrill for the game-winning run as Hope rallied from a 7-0 deficit for a 7-6 victory over Davies in Division III softball. Trailing 7-0, Hope got four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh. SPOTLIGHT •Christopher Almonte pitched five innings of no-hit ball with 10 strikeouts and Alfred Rodriquez came on to pitch the final two innings without surrendering a hit and fanned three to lead the Juanita Sanchez baseball team to a 7-0 victory over Fatima. •Peter Morelle struck out nine in his four-hit shutout while Jeff Kolb had three hits and two RBI as PCD posted a 5-0 victory over Mount Pleasant in Division II baseball. •Justin Tabis belted a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to give Classical a 4-2 win over Wheeler in Division II baseball. •Andy McKeon hit a two-run homer in the first inning and then came in to pitch in the fourth for four innings of no-hit relief, shutting down North Smithfield with strikeouts in a 3-1 victory for Johnston in Division II baseball. •Dave D'Errico pitched a complete game, scattering nine hits and striking out 10 while Cody Normand and Ryan Morris combined for six RBI as North Kingstown defeated Chariho, 10-1, in Division I baseball. Morris had a three-run double during a five-run second inning and Normand hit a three-run homer in the sixth. •Matt Nassi went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs for North Providence as the Cougars beat Cumberland, 8-7, in baseball. Eric Diggle had two 2-run homers, one in the first and the other in the seventh, for the Clippers. •Woonsocket's Jim Castonguay drove in three runs and pitched a complete-game seven-hitter in the Novans' 8-4 victory over St. Raphael in Division I baseball. Justin Rainville added two hits, two RBI and two runs scored for Woonsocket. •John Tangherlini pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and had a two-run double that forced the game to be called in the sixth inning as the Lincoln baseball team routed La Salle, 14-1, and pulled even atop the Division I-North standings. Teammates Ryan O'Dell and Jeremy Rhault each had two hits and two RBI. •Joe Enright singled in Andrew Condon and Russell Bacon in the third inning to lead Cranston East over Warwick, 2-0, in baseball. •Chris Constantino went 3-for-3, drove in two runs and scored two for Hendricken in a 4-1 win over Pilgrim in Division I West baseball. •Sean Murray had a goal and 9 asissts for the Hendricken lacrosse team as the Hawks defeated Lincoln, 18-6. •Shea's Billy Thounsaveth outlasted Chariho's Dan Rodriguez, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2), at fourth singles as the Raiders went on to defeat the Chargers, 5-2, in a Division III boys tennis crossover. •Exeter/West Greenwich freshman Sean Farrell clinched a 4-3 victory for the Scarlet Knights over PCD with a 6-1, 6-4 win at fourth singles in Division IV boys tennis •Brad Walling had 23 kills to lead North Smithfield over Shea, 3-1, in boys volleyball. Jorge Dosantos had 20 kills for the Raiders. •Mount St. Charles improved to 10-1 for first place in Division II-North with a 3-0 victory over La Salle in boys volleyball. Alex Pryor had 30 assists and 4 aces, Tom Fitzpatrick had 13 kills, 3 aces and 3 blocks and Owen Jacobs added 15 kills and 5 digs for the Mounties. •Andres Mazo had 18 kills to lead the Classical boys volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Lincoln. The Purple improved to 9-2. For the Lions, Mitch Baldwin had 15 kills and 8 blocks. •Megan Mancosh had three hits, including a double, scored 2 runs and had one RBI; and Emily Granoff had 2 hits and 2 RBIs to lead Moses Brown over North Smithfield, 7-0, in Division II softball, improving the Quakers to 8-1. •Lynn Pesola (2-for-4) broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run single in the fifth inning as Coventry defeated South Kingstown, 4-2, in Division I softball. Kate Carroll had three hits for Coventry and scored twice. Emily Johnson was 2-for-3 for the Rebels with a RBI. •Kristen Mitchell was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and an RBI single while Marian Long went 4-for-4 with three RBI as Bay View stayed undefeated (8-0) with a 9-2 win over Chariho in Division I softball. Long also pitched a complete-game three-hitter. •Casey Doyle singled in Steph Morse with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving the Warwick boys baseball team a 3-2 victory over East Providence. The Townies scored a run with two outs in the top of the seventh on an error. Caroline Hurd had an RBI triple in the second and scored a run in the fifth for the Hurricanes. •Melanie Ferreira was 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI in Lincoln's 11-3 win over Woonsocket in Division I softball. •Ashley Martin's solo homer in the top of the seventh snapped an 8-8 tie and led Smithfield to an 11-8 victory over North Providence in Division II softball. Martin finished the day with three hits and three RBI. •Beth Paul pitched a two-hit shutout and helped her own cause at the plate by going 2-for-4 with two RBI as Cumberland blanked Pilgrim, 6-0, in Division I softball. Rachel Baxter also had two hits and two RBI for the Clippers. •Jenna Denice knocked in Lauren Pallister for the winning run as East Greenwich defeated Prout, 5-4, in softball. Kayla Santos hit a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the fourth for the Avengers to tie the game. •West Warwick scored four times in the fourth inning, highlighted by Chelsea Wynne's two-run double, and pitcher Kayla Kiers made the lead stand by pitching a two-hitter as the Wizards shutout Classical, 5-0, in Division II softball. •Chris Ford, Ryan Pangborn and Ryan Levesque each had a double and Josh Pangborn had 3 hits to lead Mount St. Charles over Ponaganset, 10-1, in baseball. Vaughn Hayward had 2 doubles, went 3-for-3, had 3 hits, 2 RBI and pitched 8 strikeouts leaving the Mounties 4-0 in the season. Matt Macedo had a double for the Chieftains. •Kayla Theriault had a single, double and 2 RBIs, and Brenda Parker had a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lead Tolman over Shea, 11-1, in softball. •Portsmouth Abbey's Ryan Andrews hit three home runs and drove in nine in the Ravens' 16-8 victory over Dexter in nonleague baseball. Andrews hit a two-run shot in the first, then added three-run homers in the third and fourth innings and an RBI groundout in the fifth. Frank Holbrook was 4-for-4 with a double, home run, four runs scored and three RBI. •Dave Linback won the discus and hammer throw while Cole Bentley captured the javelin and high jump as the duo led Cumberland to Northern Division boys outdoor track victories over Cranston West and Mount St. Charles. •Juliette Vongphoumy shot an even-par 37 at Crestwood Country Club, helping La Salle to a West Division golf victory over Tolman. •Ally Boglioli and Merritt Bauer combined for 13 goals as Portsmouth Abbey pulled away late in the second half for a 21-16 nonleague girls lacrosse win over Wheeler. Wheeler scored six straight goals early in the second half to tie it at 13-13. Boglioli (8 goals) then scored three times and Bauer (5 goals) added two to put the game away. Steph Perez added three goals and six assists for the Ravens. Wheeler was led by Hope Barone and Aria Morris, who each scored five goals. |
