High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Rogers storms back to beat St. Raphael12:25 PM EDT on Friday, May 2, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Rogers overcame an 8-4 deficit with four runs in the final two innings as the Vikings rallied for a 9-8 victory over St. Raphael in Division I baseball. Rogers scored three runs in the sixth inning, including the tying run on a Mason Choice RBI groundout. The Vikings won it when Kyle DaCosta singled home Johnny Harrington in the seventh inning. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Crystal Morrison scored one run, had two RBI and knocked in Katie Paddock for the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning for Classical and it held on against Ponaganset for a 4-3 Division II North softball win. •East Providence needed five sets to defeat winless South Kingstown as the Townies rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 victory in Division I boys volleyball. James Boyce led the Townies' comeback with 25 digs and 17 kills while David Reynolds contributed 10 kills and 4 blocks. •A two-out triple by Toll Gate’s Amanda Marble in the top of the seventh inning drove in two runs to give the Titans a 3-2 victory over East Providence in a Division I softball game. Teammate Jordan Allen went 3-for-4 with an RBI. For the Townies, Caity Arico and Marion Potter each had two hits. Toll Gate impoved to 8-1 while East Providence slipped to 4-5. •Jordan DaCruz had a pair of RBI doubles, including the game-winner in the fourth inning, as Lincoln held off North Providence for a 3-2 victory in Division I baseball. Ryan Silva had an RBI triple for Lincoln. •Jen Tartaglia's three-run homer in the third inning was all it took as the St. Raphael softball team held off a two-run last-inning rally to defeat Cranston West 3-2 in a Division I contest. Alicia Mayer knocked in the two runs in the seventh inning for the Falcons. SPOTLIGHT •Besides recording the win, Burrillville's Kyle Van Rossum had a double and two singles while teammate Tim L'Esperance also had a double and two singles and was responsible for three runs batted in, in the Broncos' 7-4 Division II-North baseball win over Ponaganset. Nick Haffner had three singles and two runs scored for the Chieftains. •Ben Rice hit a two-run homer and a two-run single as Westerly outslugged West Warwick, 11-9, in Division I baseball. •Pat Rock one-hit Tolman and got solid defense from his teammates, getting a couple of double plays after giving up five walks, as the Providence Country Day baseball team defeated Tolman, 4-0, in Division II-East. Jeff Kolb had a solo home run for the Knights. •Barrington's Will Conaway avenged a previous loss to Mount St. Charles' Chris Aiudi at first singles, 6-0, 6-2, as did the Eagles' second doubles team of Chris Robinson and Tom Vanhentenryck in a 7-5, 6-3 win over Brett Armstrong and Nate Guevremont, 7-5, 6-3, in a 7-0 victory. •Hendricken got three-set, come-from-behind victories from Ryan Denkewicz at first singles and from Scott Fielding and Alex Prinscott at first doubles to defeat North Kingstown, 5-2, in Division I boys tennis. Denkewicz won 1-6, 6-1, 6-1, while Fielding and Prinscott won 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. •Toll Gate’s Dillon Rothermel defeated his opponent, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4, at fourth singles and clinched a 4-3 victory over Prout Division II-South boys tennis. •Cranston East’s second doubles team of Nate Friedman and Kevin Coccio posted a 6-4, 7-6 victory that clinched a 4-3 Division IV boys tennis victory over PCD. •Michael Ohanian had 19 kills and Rob Nelson added 14 digs as the North Kingstown boys volleyball team eked out a 25-23, 25-20, 26-28, 25-23 win over Coventry. Shawn Gudmunson had 12 kills and Dave McArdle had 22 assists for the Oakers. •Warwick’s Steph Morse hit for the cycle, but La Salle came away with the victory as the Rams’ offense belted 14 hits in a 13-6 win over the Hurricanes in Division I softball. Morse singled in her first at-bat, hit a solo homer in the third, laced a RBI triple in the fifth inning and doubled in her final at-bat in the seventh. Lizzie Graham led La Salle with two hits and two RBI. •Alycia Broccoli went 2-for-2 from the plate, hit a three-run homer and walked as Coventry defeated Bay View 4-1 in Division I softball. The Oakers’ Elise Fortier struck out five and spread five hits over seven innings to hand Bay View its first loss of the season. |
