WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Toll Gate’s Nick Politelli had a two-run double to break open 4-4 game and highlight a four-run top of the seventh for the Titans and they held on for an 8-5 baseball win over Toll Gate. •Classical pitcher Josh Okolowitcz knocked in what turned out to be the game-winning run in the fourth inning and then faced only 10 batters in the final three innings (giving up only one hit) to hold on for a 2-1 Division II win over Scituate. Freshman Apolinar DellaCruz’ double in the first inning drove in Classical’s first run. •After going to the intermission ahead 7-6, the Wheeler boys lacrosse team shut down Cumberland in the second half on the strength of goalie John Sweriduk’s 19 saves for the 12-7 Division I-A win. Will Sorin had three goals and two assists and Trey Dandreta added three goals and an assist for the Warriors. •Liz Kacz struck out 14, only walked one and spread four hits over seven innings as the Moses Brown softball team defeated Burrillville 4-2. Burrillville’s Kristina Gingell had two hits, including a double and accounted for both Broncos RBI. SPOTLIGHT •Mike Farias had a no-hitter for five innings before giving way to reliever Jimmy Meiklejohn, and Andrew Varone went 3-for-5 as the Exeter/West Greenwich baseball team defeated Central Falls 12-1. The Warriors’ Edwin Rivera had a solo home run for Central Falls’ only run. •Kevin Carey had two doubles and three RBI to lead South Kingstown over Narragansett, 9-3, in a Division I-South baseball game. The Rebels improve to 12-1. •The Cranston West baseball team collected 13 hits, led by Tommy Cappelli, who had 3 hits and 2 RBI and Danny Hopkins, who hit a three-run homer, as the Falcons defeated Warwick, 12-2. Pitcher Tyler Corsi went six innings and got the victory for the Falcons, who improved to 10-2. •Senior Billy Cosmopulos pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and went 2-for-2 (double and triple) with three RBI to lead the Moses Brown baseball team to a 8-0 victory over Middletown in Division I-East. Cosmopulos is unbeaten this season and improved his record to 5-0 with a 1.40 ERA. The Quakers, now 10-3, broke the game open in the fifth when they scored six runs. •Mark Ventura had three hits and four RBI and Bill Greenleaf pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts to lead the Tiverton baseball team to a 12-2 win over Rogers. •Matt Brown hit a three-run double in the top of the fourth inning to give Wheeler a 6-1 lead en route to a 7-4 win over Hope in a Division II baseball game. Sean Sweeney got the complete-game victory. •Zach Furtado had a pair of goals and three assists to lead Toll Gate to a 6-4 boys lacrosse win over East Providence. •Conor O’Donnell had six goals and two assists in La Salle’s 13-2 boys lacrosse win over Portsmouth. •Zach Okolowitcz had 11 kills and 4 blocks and Richard Grasso had 10 kills and a block as the Cranston West volleyball team defeated Westerly, 3-1. •Justin Amaral had 19 kills for the Warwick volleyball team as it posted a sweep of Cranston East. •Sarah Beron netted seven goals and assisted on two others as the North Providence girls lacrosse team defeated Westerly, 15-3. •Natalie Simas and Jordan Allen each went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the 9-1 Toll Gate softball team to an 8-2 victory over Cranston West. •Stephanie Corey went 2-for-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI to lead the Narragansett softball team to a 4-2 win over Exeter/West Greenwich. |
