High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Cranston West gets big win in baseball02:25 PM EDT on Monday, May 5, 2008GAME OF THE DAY With yesterday’s 3-1 win over North Kingstown, the Cranston West baseball team pulled ahead of the Skippers by a half-game, moving to 11-2 on the season. Falcons’ catcher Austin Milan had an RBI-single in the three run third and West’s pitching combination of Dan Hopkins, Joe Portukalian and Anthony Meo combined to four-hit North Kingstown. Meo came in with two out in the sixth to earn the four-out save. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •East Greenwich took an 8-6 lead in the top of the eighth, but Narragansett rallied in its half of the inning with three runs to post a 9-8 Division I-South win. •With two outs in the sixth, Mount St. Charles’ Rebecca Ashley walked, stole second, and third, and was singled in by Nikki Silva for the winning run in the Mounties’ 2-1 softball win over Moses Brown. Kelly Ryan held the Quakers to three hits and struck out seven in five innings before Jess Chabot came in and retired all six batters she faced to record the win. •La Salle pitcher Jordan Tingley struck out 12 and Mary Holt was on base four times, including a single and triple, leading the Rams to a 6-2 softball win over South Kingstown. •Andy Joseph scored a goal halfway through the overtime after Hendricken went on the man advantage to seal the 7-6 win for the Hawks over Moses Brown in lacrosse. •Milan Adams had a two-run homer in the fifth inning to provide the winning run as Hendricken defeated Xaverian Brothers of Westwood, Mass., 6-4, in nonleague baseball. SPOTLIGHT •Corey Gower spread three hits over six innings and struck out six before giving way to R.J. Shea who picked up the save as the Barrington baseball team defeated Cumberland 3-0. •Cole Stewart had a three-run single in the third inning to put the Toll Gate baseball team up 5-0 in its eventual 5-2 win over Coventry. •Vinnie Gieck had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning and Derek Rogala was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored as Ponaganset beat Central Falls in baseball, 7-2. •Sarah Witten was 3-for-4, with a single, triple and leadoff homer in the first inning as the Barrington softball team defeated East Greenwich, 5-0. |
