High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Lincoln hands Portsmouth its first baseball loss03:32 PM EDT on Tuesday, May 6, 2008GAME OF THE DAY The Portsmouth baseball team lost its first game of the season yesterday, against Lincoln, as the Lions scored six runs in the sixth inning en route to a 6-2 victory. Portsmouth got a solid start from pitcher John Pedrotty, who gave up three hits and an earned run and struck out nine through six innings. But a season-high seven errors, including four in the sixth, proved costly for the Patriots, now 12-1. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Tied 1-1 after seven innings, the Barrington and Prout softball teams both got a run in the eighth and failed to score in the ninth. The Crusaders failed to score in the 10th, but with two out in the bottom of the inning and runners on first and third, Tricia Hendrickson hit a hard shot to third base that was misplayed and Kelly Movsesian scored the winning run for the Eagles. Jamie Hallam pitched a complete game for Barrington, allowing only two hits while striking out 21. Olivia Gamache also pitched 10 innings for Prout, giving up two hits and striking out eight. •Josh Ribeiro hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh for Mt. Hope in its 6-5 baseball win over Providence Country Day. Lue Barry knocked in Ricky Lima to tie the game for the Huskies. The Knights’ Mike Panozzi had an RBI triple in the top of the sixth to give Mt. Hope a 5-0 lead. •Matt Eldridge scored with 11 seconds remaining to give the Narragansett boys lacrosse team a 7-6 victory over Portsmouth. •A single by Maryellen Vigeant with two outs in the sixth inning drove in the winning run as the Narragansett softball team beat East Greenwich, 2-1. Stephanie Corey pitched a complete game for the Mariners, scattering seven hits over seven innings, striking out five and pitching a perfect 1-2-3 final inning. SPOTLIGHT •Matt Nassi went 2-for-3 with five RBI for North Providence in its 9-3 baseball win over Tiverton. •St. Raphael pitcher Drew Given pitched a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh when John Kashmanian drove him in with a single as the Saints defeated Cumberland, 3-2, in a Division I-North baseball game. Given scored two runs and also had an RBI double in the second. •Nico DellaPorta pitched six innings and struck out 14 while allowing only three hits as the Johnston baseball team defeated Shea, 6-4. •Anthony Tortolano scattered six hits over six innings, gave up two earned runs and hit a two-run homer as the Exeter/West Greenwich baseball team defeated Tolman, 12-3. •Central got home runs from Jeff Salcedo , Franklin Britto and Hans Castillo as the Knights routed Mount Pleasant, 14-2, in Division II baseball. Castillo’s blast was a three-run shot while Salcedo’s and Britto’s were solo homers. The victory improved the Knights to 10-3 while the loss was only the second for the Kilties. •Apolinar DeLaCruz had two doubles and two RBI and Rocky Santopietro was 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Classical baseball team defeated Juanita Sanchez, 11-6, in a game both teams needed as they battle for the final playoff spot in Division II. •Alex Prior had 34 assists, Tim Fitzpatick had 11 kills and Owen Jacobs added 10 kills as the Mount St. Charles boys volleyball team blanked Hendricken, 3-0. •Danielle Lotti pitched a one-hitter, retiring the first 11 batters she faced and striking out 10, and also had the game-winning RBI in the sixth inning as the St. Raphael softball team defeated Coventry, 2-0. •Katie Guida and Taylor Drew each had three hits and three RBI and Kayla Dallaire went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Mt. Hope softball team to an 11-2 win over Tiverton in Division II. |
