High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Skippers beat Rebels in baseball showdown10:07 AM EDT on Wednesday, May 7, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Nick Savickas and Jamal Horne each singled in a run, and Nate Izzo had two hits and two runs scored as the North Kingstown High School baseball team defeated South Kingstown, 3-1, in a Division I-South showdown. Both teams came in with identical records. The Skippers improved to 13-2 while the Rebels dropped to 12-3. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Matt Massi scored on a sacrifice fly by Dan Pennine with one out as North Providence beat La Salle, 4-3, in 10 innings in baseball. The Cougars are now 8-7. •A suicide squeeze in the bottom of the sixth inning by Smithfield’s Charlie Kwolak scored John Kachmanian for the game-winning run as the Sentinels came back from a 5-1 deficit and beat Cumberland, 6-5, in a Division I-North baseball game. Eric LaRoche’s RBI double in the fifth tied it, 5-5, for the Sentinels. •Toll Gate edged East Greenwich, 4-3, in a Division II-South boys tennis match as the second-doubles team of James Dorsey and Ryan Rafanelli clinched the match with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win. •Cranston West’s Jenna Matisewski pulled the Falcons even, 5-5, with Lincoln on a goal with six minutes remaining, and teammate Jenna Childs scored the game-winner two minutes later. Erin Murtagh led the Falcons with three goals. •The Scituate girls lacrosse team remained undefeated (9-0) with a 9-3 win over Middletown (8-2) in Division II. Maddi Clarke had a team-high three goals for the Spartans. •Katherine Sullivan hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Liz Kacz recorded 17 strikeouts in leading Moses Brown to a 3-2 victory over Johnston in Division II-North softball. Johnston, which was led by Stephanie Carpentieri (two hits and an RBI), had the tying run on third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Kacz struck out the next two batters to secure the win for the division leaders. •Caity Arico hit a triple with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as East Providence topped La Salle, 1-0, in softball. Kelley Clancy allowed one hit and pitched nine strikeouts improving the Townies to 5-5. SPOTLIGHT •Ryan Westmoreland gave up one hit and struck out eight in Portsmouth’s 14-0 victory over Moses Brown, 14-0, in baseball. David Wordell hit a three run homer in the fifth inning as the Patriots improved to 15-1. •Bryan Soderberg pitched a complete game shutout as East Providence beat Barrington, 3-0, in baseball. •Troy Rotundo hit a bases-clearing triple in the fourth inning and scored on a RBI single from T.J. Difilippo as Warwick downed Coventry, 8-6, in baseball. Peter Ruggerio hit a solo homer for Vets, now 2-11. Nick Palumbo had four hits, including a double and three singles for the Knotty Oakers. •Mike Dewald allowed only five hits and had five strikeouts as Chariho beat East Greenwich, 3-1, in baseball. Brendon Murray allowed only five hits and had three strikeouts and James Kerin went 3-for-3 with a triple and one RBI for the Avengers. •Nate Lindo scored three goals and assisted on five others to lead the East Greenwich boys lacrosse team to a 12-4 victory over South Kingstown in Division II-South. The Avengers improved to 8-1 while the Rebels fell to 2-7. •Phil Winslow and T.J. Blair scored five goals apiece to lead the Mount St. Charles boys lacrosse team to a 15-6 win over Scituate in Division II. The Mounties improve to 8-1. •Joe Algere won his sixth consecutive match with a 6-0, 7-5 win at third singles as Westerly defeated Ponaganset, 5-2, in boys tennis. •Justin Amaral had 18 kills and 4 blocks and John Canning had 8 service aces and 3 blocks in Warwick’s 3-1 win over Pilgrim in volleyball. •Dan Tisser had 17 kills and 4 assisted blocks to lead the North Kingstown boys volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Hendricken. •Sarah Beron scored five goals and Jessalyn O’Neill had three as North Providence defeated Mount St. Charles, 9-3, in a Division II girls lacrosse match. •Jill Parker had three goals and four assists to lead the Mt. Hope girls lacrosse team to a 12-6 win over Cumberland. •Bethany Paul was one hit short of the cycle with a single, double and triple with an RBI and two runs scored as the Cumberland softball team defeated St. Raphael, 3-1. Teammate Jenna George pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts. •Heather Imperatore went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and Allison Stefanski went 1-for-2 with two walks and scored three runs as Westerly defeated Pilgrim, 13-6, in Division I softball. •Emily Branch went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in North Kingstown’s 7-4 win over Chariho in softball. •Leslie Peralta pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11 to lead the Central softball team to a 7-1 victory over Central Falls in Division III. •Rita Bolton had two singles, a double and three RBI and Lauren Figueroa added two singles, a triple and an RBI as the Shea softball team defeated Mount Pleasant, 14-4, in five innings. |
