High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Mount pulls out baseball victory over PCD01:20 PM EDT on Thursday, May 8, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the ninth, the Mount St. Charles baseball team rallied with a sacrifice fly by Josh Lancellotti (four RBI on the day) scoring Tim Coffey to tie the game. Then John Guay (two hits, RBI) knocked in Chris Ford for the game-winning run to defeat PCD, 10-9. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Chelsea Wynne hit a triple to drive in Ty Garrick for the winning run and Wynne scored on ground out by Carissa McKendall in the sixth inning for the final run by West Warwick defeating North Smithfield, 7-5, in softball. Abbey Williamson went 2-for-4 with a triple for the Wizards. Marissa Mercier led the first inning off with a two-run homer and Renee Delisle followed up with a two-run homer in the second inning for the Northmen. Audry Drapau went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored for North Smithfield. •Mike DePasquale singled in two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the East Greenwich baseball team a 6-5 victory over Pilgrim in Division I. Pilgrim’s Kevin Stenhouse had a two-run triple in the top of the sixth to tie the score, 4-4. •The Smithfield softball team made the most of its two hits as Ashley Burns and Ashley Martin both hit home runs off Moses Brown ace, Liz Kacz, and the Sentinels held on for a 2-1 win over Moses Brown. •Classical outhit Canston East, 14-5, but made 11 errors, including two in the top of the 10th, when the Bolts scored two runs and held on for a 10-9 victory in a Division II-North softball game. •Kayla Rogers had four hits and four RBI in leading the Narragansett softball team to a 25-11 win over Tiverton. Rachel Motta led the Tigers with a grand slam in the second inning. SPOTLIGHT •Jim Castonguay struck out eight in a 5-2 complete-game win over East Providence, and pitched out of trouble, including a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning with one out when he struck out two to retire the side. •John Masse pitched a complete-game four-hitter to lead the West Warwick baseball team to a 5-4 win over Warwick. •Jake Tillman allowed only two hits and struck out eight in five innings as the Scituate baseball team defeated Wheeler, 12-0. •Tiverton’s Nick McGaw defeated previously unbeaten Ryan Gioveia, of Exeter/West Greenwich, 6-2, 6-4, at first singles as the Tigers went on to defeat the Avengers, 6-1, in boys tennis. •Shawn Gudmundson had 21 kills and 3 blocks, and David McArdle added 31 assists, 3 blocks and 2 aces as the Coventry volleyball team went on to a straight-set win over Chariho. •Ashley Moreira threw a no-hitter, striking out 11 and only walking one as the Mt. Hope softball team defeated Prout, 1-0. |
